[SOLVED] Arch boot Hangs "Started Update man-db cache" after -Syu-ing

Hello guys. I'm here to ask for your help. As my subject says, I did a full system update very recently by doing pacman -Syu and I think it broke my system. I don't know what the caused the boot process to hang but here's the list of things I did:

0. Everything was working perfectly fine since September 29.
1. October 08, 2014, I did a full system update by doing pacman -Syu ( after I visited the bugs.archlinux.org to make sure there are no bugs that could impact my system),
2. Rebooted the computer,
3. Boot process stopped at "Reached Target Graphical Interface" very similar to this one http://i60.tinypic.com/2zrj51f.jpg,
4. Since nvidia was upgraded to 343.22-2, I chrooted and tried to downgrade to the recently working version 340.32-2 (the one I had in my cache). Downgrade didn't work. Screenshot http://i.imgur.com/gSmhw0A.png
5. Checked the /var/log/pacman.log

Re: [SOLVED] Arch boot Hangs "Started Update man-db cache" after -Syu-ing

Hello
Each nvidia package is built against a specific kernel release package:
nvidia 343.22-2 works with linux 3.16.4-1
but
nvidia 340.32-2 is built and will work only with linux 3.16.3-1

So you can't downgrade only the nvidia package without the kernel associated with it.

But apart from that, your graphic card maybe is not compatible with the latest nvidia driver; you could try the legacy 340xx packages.

I have the same problem . Computer is unable to boot after I Syu'ed. Last update were indeed the Nvidia drivers.

Re: [SOLVED] Arch boot Hangs "Started Update man-db cache" after -Syu-ing

@berbae Thank you! Indeed. The culprit was the incompatible nvidia-340.32.2 package being upgraded to the latest 343.22-2.  You hit the bull in between the eyes! After installing nvidia-340xx legacy driver and its 2 other dependencies (chrooting of course), the issue is now resolved. Thank you for the help.

@Simthadim, yes, you may try the legacy nvidia-340xx driver. I hope it resolves the issue for you too. I have nvidia GT9500 as my videocard and i think it is now one of the legacy products the needs to be using the 340xx legacy driver. Per announcement here https://www.archlinux.org/news/nvidia-340xx-and-nvidia/, legacy cards need to use the legacy 340xx driver.

Issue resolved and now requesting closure.

PS. How do I edit my thread title to prepend the word [SOLVED] in it?

--edited for clarity.

Re: [SOLVED] Arch boot Hangs "Started Update man-db cache" after -Syu-ing

Hi there,

...please be gentle, this is my first time...

I think I've got the same Problem, but my nvidia card is definitely not outdated...

I also -Syua ed via yaourt and ended up at "Reached Target Graphical Interface" after reboot...

the systemctrl said something about execformat error loading nvidia module...

It took me some time and help of a friend to figure out what to downgrade to get my system up an running again...

I edited pacman's ignore config to prevent my system from breaking again...

Since then I'm stuck here...

Since I am not that familiar and experienced with troubleshooting and bug reporting I would apreciate any hints on what to do / where to post / report and what information to provide to get this solved...

Thanx and Cheers,
