Lapton fan stops and runs at full speed when running on battery

It began some months ago, can't tell exactly when but when I unplug the laptop its fan stops until the cpu temp goes up to 89° then it starts a full speed until the temp drops down to around 77 and fully stops again (opened the case and saw it)... a so on....
Two issues with this behavior, one the high temp the cpu reaches the other is the extremely annoying sound of the fan at full speed. The laptop is quite old and basic but it didn't behave like this before.
I don't know how to tweak fan controls as sensors (plugged) only output is:

$ sensors

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1:        +70.2°C  (high = +70.0°C)
                       (crit = +100.0°C, hyst = +95.0°C)

Tried stoping laptop mode tools but it's the same.

May this be caused by the kernel on a 4 years old laptop??

Thanks, jose.
