[SOLVED] dwm won't start

Hello Arch-People,

I installed Arch two days ago on my desktop.

I've been struggling with the Nvidia drivers.
Whenever I run:
startx
my screen goes black and I get an error message. Not quite sure what to do.

I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, xorg, xorg-init, pretty much everything and tried re-installing again. At first it said nvidia module not found
now it doesn't even say that after my tweaking (or further breaking).

I'm trying to install dwm. Whenever I run [dwm] I get thrown back to a login prompt.

PS: Please let me know if I let anything out, or you need more information. I'm really quite new at this and wil probably mess up (again) during my Arch-Quest. Yes, I do call it that.

EDIT: Added "exec dwm" to .xinitrc , where it belongs.

What are you trying to start? Please paste your .xinitrc.

Re: [SOLVED] dwm won't start

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice

Sorry about that. Guess it works now.

I'm trying to start dwm. I followed the instructions on the wiki, installed it using ABS, whenever I run

 exec dwm

I get sent back to the login prompt.
And I get a really brief (barely noticeable) message that says cannot find display .
I haven't installed any window managers or graphical environments, just dwm.

Re: [SOLVED] dwm won't start

There are instructions on the dwm wiki page about logging: turn it on and see what is going on.

Re: [SOLVED] dwm won't start

Add 'exec dwm' to your ~/.xinitrc. dwm - as the name suggests - is a window manager.

This. Add it at the end.

Also, if that doesn't work: Are you running stock dwm or did you mod it?

Re: [SOLVED] dwm won't start

No point in worrying about modifications yet.  The current behavior is exactly as should be expected.  Dwm does not start X, X should start dwm.  If you run 'dwm' from a tty it will just give an error and exit.  If you run 'exec dwm' it will give an error, exit, and log you out due to the exec command replacing the currently running shell.  Any invocation of X will currently just exit successfully because there is nothing in xinitrc for X to do.

As above - just add "exec dwm" to the end of your xinitrc where it belongs, then use xinit/startx to start X.

Re: [SOLVED] dwm won't start

Added "exec dwm" to my .xinitrc, also facepalmed myself back to the wiki.
Everything works now. So simple...

Thanks for the help smile
