[Solved] Gnome 3.14 with Touchscreen Problems

Hi. I am using Sony VAIO Pro SVP13213STB Ultrabook. This ultrabook has touchscreen. After I read that Gnome 3.14 brought many touchscreen features, I switched KDE to Gnome 3.14. But I have some problems.

1) When I want to type something, Gnome's on-screen keyboard (I think it is called "caribou") appears but I don't want to use on-screen keyboard. Physical keyboard is enough for me. I tried to remove caribou from /etc/xdg/autostart but it didn't worked. I also tried to remove caribou package with -Rdd option but this time, gnome-shell was not able to start. How can I block this on-screen keyboard?

2) When I am using the ultrabook without mouse, I can not see the mouse pointer so I can not use touchpad. When I plug a mouse, this time I can not use touchscreen. How can I use both of touchscreen and touchpad/mouse at the same time?

Re: [Solved] Gnome 3.14 with Touchscreen Problems

1) In the Settings->Universal Access you can turn off the onscreen keyboard.
2) Do you have xf86-input-synaptics installed?

I find the Florence Virtual Keyboard better then the Gnome Onscreen Keyboard, there is even a extension:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/ … indicator/

Thanks for your answer. Installing xf86-input-synaptics fixed the second problem.

But I could not fix the first problem. It is already turned off but every time I want to type something, on-screen keyboard appears.

Re: [Solved] Gnome 3.14 with Touchscreen Problems

Just uninstall it, it isn't the 'official' Gnome Onscreen keyboard anyway.
Or look in ~/.config/autostart if there is a Caribou desktop file you can remove.

Re: [Solved] Gnome 3.14 with Touchscreen Problems

Same problem after updating to 3.14 (Dell Inspiron 2-in-1)

1) Noticed in the 3.13 release notes:

On-screen keyboard shows automatically when there's no keyboard

So I guess maybe keyboard presence detection is broken for some laptops?

Yes it is, in Gnome3 caribou replaces GOK from Gnome2. It's also a dependency of gnome-shell, Gnome3 won't start if you ignore that and uninstall it anyway.
Removing/editing autostart doesn't work either.

2) is only partially solved with xf86-input-synaptics, the cursor is visible in application windows but not in activities overview or when you move the mouse over the top bar.

3.14 is also only just out of [testing] so I'd give it a while before things like this are ironed out.

Re: [Solved] Gnome 3.14 with Touchscreen Problems

Actually, after I installed xf86-input-synaptics, on-screen keyboard no longer appears on the screen. I didn't understand the reason but it is fixed somehow. I didn't do anything to fix this problem. I wish I could say more about solving this problem sad

Installing xf86-input-synaptics completely solved my problem, I can use touchpad everwhere on gnome normally.

me too... i'm using gnome 3.14 on my thinkpad helix, and caribou has been driving me insane. i do (and did prior to upgrading from 3.13 to 3.14) have xf86-input-synaptics installed already. i use onboard, as i've found it to be the most competent onscreen keyboard available for desktop linux, so i don't need or want gnome's pitiful attempt at touchscreen input getting in my way every damn time i tap a text box, terminal, etc. i've found that its hardware keyboard detection is at least semi-functional, as it only pops up when i use the touchscreen. i'm glad to see that gnome is (slowly) starting to make progress in the area of touchscreen text input, but they really should have included any kind of option whatsoever to turn off their implementation.

i found this reddit post, which pointed me in the right direction... i've been able to get caribou to stop bothering me by removing the Exec= lines from /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.Caribou.Antler.service and /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.Caribou.Daemon.service . not an elegant solution at all, but at least i can use my tablet in peace again.
