Well, I've stared at the possible upgrade from postgresql 7.3.4-1 to 7.4-1 and kept thinking "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." However, as many of you know, I like to play on the bleeding edge side of the fence. However, this upgrade was a mistake.
Postgresql 7.4-1 will not start, and the logs give the following.
LOG: database system is shut down
FATAL: database files are incompatible with server
DETAIL: The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 7.3, which is not compatible with this version 7.4.

sarah31,
I can't seem to find anything here (bbs) on this topic. I haven't had a chance to google about this or talk to dorphell. I just wanted to warn others who might be using postgresql in a mission critical way that they could run into problems.
If I find the solution, or someone lets me know, I'll be sure to post it here.

The only solution I found time ago, was reinstall 7.1 make a backup, install 7.2 and make a restore..... may be this is the path to this version too.... Generaly in the release docs say when change the directory structure and need a backup/restore to upgrade
Maybe pacman could handle some option in the install script to alert the user about this kind situation and ask about continue or cancel.....

probably just a post-install script that just prints some instructions would work, without requiring any special (new) functionality from pacman.
Hapy.
