problems with latex and coverting tex file to pdf using pdf latex

hi there, I'm new with latex but have been using it on my college machines this week and converting files to pdf format using the command 'pdflatex test.tex'
however, after installing latex and texliv on my laptop i get this error message appear. any help would be much appreciated as my first report is due this week and has to be submitted in latex format !! thanks

What's in the tex file? If it's a complex file, have you tried a minimal tex file?

just a simple file we were given as a test in our college class. i know it converts correctly as ive done it on another machine.

Do you know what version of LaTeX/TeX is being used on the machines in your college class? I don't think that should be the issue, as it's mainly the tiny things which no-one notices that break between TeX versions.

Can you share that simple file? If we can compile it, then we know something is wrong on your system. If we can't it is likely it relies on specific packages are versions of tools on the school's computer.

I think you should delete /var/lib/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map and try again.
