Proper way to shutdown system running on external HDD?

I'm running Arch on an external HDD (connected by USB 3, no external power supply). When shutting down (using the poweroff command) the HDD makes a loud clicking noise. I'm a bit worried that this might damage the HDD.

What's the proper procedure for shutting down a system running on an external HDD?

The proper proceedure is just turning it off is with 'poweroff' or 'systemctl poweroff'.  I have an internal drive on one of my computers that runs Arch and it makes a loud noise also, but that's been happening for many years now and never has shown a problem.

I don't want to work.  I want to bang on the drum all day.
