AUR: linux-stable316 (kernel 3.16.y)

It seems a lot of us are having issues with 3.17.y on laptops -- this is to provide a 3.16.y (currently 3.16.7) stable kernel that's exactly like the official 3.16.4 build to make it easy to reboot back and forth without having to swap packages:

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-stable316/

From my comment there:

This is for the latest 3.16 stable tree releases; the last official package commit for 3.16.4 was used as the base:

https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … 41347ae82a

The patches were verified as still needed, then the version bumped to 3.16.7 and package renamed for AUR. It's tracking this branch:

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel … nux-3.16.y

...to provide this stable kernel.

The LTS package is unfortunately too old to support some of the hardware I have (rather, what Dell chose to use), needed 3.16.x and it seems rock solid. *shrug* We'll keep banging away at 3.17.y until it matures.

Hey, I like the idea of the package for the purposes of switching between 3.16 and 3.17.

Isn't 3.16.7 the EOL for the 3.16 branch though?

Also, have you tried to see whether your issues are fixed with the 3.18 mainline?

Yeah, from what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) 3.16.7 is the end of the line for that branch. The problem we have in general is a choice between something that works, and random problems (I'm personally not affected by *all* of them, but I see udev hangs, radeon issues, etc. - for me it's my stupid Synaptics touchpad). So I needed a way to easily flip flop between *functional* and the newest -- 3.17.y sure seems squirrely.

I have not tried mainline - it takes so blessed long to compile a kernel on this laptop it's not funny, so I'll keep testing the official packages and have a fallback that works day to day. On my home laptop I can dork around, but the one for work I need it to *work* (it's also a Dell) for my job.

Ubuntu took over maintenance of 3.16, although they didn't tag a next release yet. http://lwn.net/Articles/618862/

Great info, thanks! - I've added it as a comment to the AUR for visibility. It'll probably affect how the package is built (sources download), we'll have to wait and see when then next release comes out...
