Yesterday I was trying to re-install arch, complete wipe to setup bcache on new disks.
I was getting buffer IO errors which I assumed were related to using bcache-tools
However today I tested the same stuff in a vm,
I'm still getting buffer IO errors - however much earlier - just after booting install media and running
pacman -Sy base-devel

Media is archlinux-2014.11.01-dual.iso - checksum is valid
I'll retest this evening on the physical machine, to see if it errors in the same spot

have fixed in vm by not upgrading the packages in base-devel - only installing missing
fgrep -vf <(pacman -Qq) <(pacman -Sgq base-devel) | xargs pacman -S --noconfirm

I had problems trying to install base-devel also. I used the archiso scripts to build a custom iso with the releng configuration and just dropped the package for bcache-tools (that I built on another computer) in the releng/airootfs/etc/ directory.
I don't think it's that difficult to also install the entire base-devel group on the custom iso, but all I needed was the bcache-tools package.
