Hi folks.
After getting over that "maybe xorg-11R7 entered [current] way too early"-feeling, I finally fixed everything up and my system works fine...
...until I try to set a new font for xmms, use xfontsel, and probably some more operations. In this case, the screen turns black, I return silently to the gdm login screen, and in /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1, this message is the last:
/usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Init_FreeType
/usr/X11R6 is a symlink, it leads back to /usr.
libxfont is installed.
freetype is installed (both).
Font paths are correct.
X starts without errors, not even warnings.
anyone got some insight about this?
(also, google did not turn up any usable search results.)

Never mind, nuked it with fullblown reinstall...
No one from the x.org-ppl seemed to know this one, so I guess there may be other things related to it than the update.
Thank god /home and /etc is enough for backup.
