[SOLVED] Hibernation

Hi,
my problem is that each time I try to hibernate, the computer seems to just shut down suddenly and when I try to boot up again I got the check of not-clearly-umounted-disks.

I have no /var/log/pm-suspend.log and can't think of any other idea to determine what's wrong.

All I did was changing one grub line from

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet resume=/dev/disk/by-uuid/55cdec93-b060-4680-8b18-56749d2010d0"

but it didn't help.

swapon -s

Swap:          3.9G          0B        3.9G

Thanks for any help.

Why Linux? Because it doesn't hide anything from you. It puts you so closely in control of your machine that you can feel its heartbeat.

Re: [SOLVED] Hibernation

Did you regenerate your Grub config ?
According to: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … e_for_GRUB

I have no /var/log/pm-suspend.log and can't think of any other idea to determine what's wrong.

There should be information in the journal.

Re: [SOLVED] Hibernation

Yes, I did regenerate grub config file.

Journal output: (wasn't sure what's relevant, so I might have copied a little more than needed)

Re: [SOLVED] Hibernation

I uninstalled tlp and installed pm-utils to get pm log. So here it is.

I'm not sure about where exactly the problem occurs. Pm-log says that hibernation was successful, but if the problem were only in not finding the hibernated image on swap, why would there always be disk-check on the bootup? Wouldn't it simply bootup normally without the hibernated image? But if the problem occurs in the hibernation process why it is that the computer shuts down unexpectedly and thus forcing the disk-check. I think it should just failed writing the image and then shutdown normally. Either way, the disk-check seems odd to me, but I don't have much experience with arch so I can be wrong.

Why Linux? Because it doesn't hide anything from you. It puts you so closely in control of your machine that you can feel its heartbeat.

That's because when the system shuts down normally it unmounts the disks. But when it hibernates it doesn't. Then, if it fails resuming and boots up normally, it finds that the disks were left in a not cleanly unmounted state and performs a fsck.
(That's how I think it is, hope that's correct... wink)

Maybe you have to read the journal as root, I think there should be some more information available than what you posted.

Ah, also this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … al_ramdisk

(systemd has native suspend and hibernate support, so I'm using these, no need for pm-utils any more.. 'systemctl suspend' and 'systemctl hibernate'
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Po … _hibernate.
But the basic configuration is the same since it's a kernel function anyways.)

Re: [SOLVED] Hibernation

Maybe you should post your mkinitcpio.conf as well. Do you have a resume hook in there?

mkinitcpio.conf

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
MODULES=""

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=""

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
#    HOOKS="base"
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS="base udev autodetect block filesystems"
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
##   No autodetection is done.
#    HOOKS="base udev block filesystems"
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS="base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems"
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
#    HOOKS="base udev block lvm2 filesystems"
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck"

Re: [SOLVED] Hibernation

You need to add 'resume' to your 'HOOKS'. At least thats what I had to do to get it working for me.

The wiki suggests adding 'resume' to HOOKS: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hi … _initramfs

Thanks, I should have read the wiki more carefully. smile
