i saw the xorg-drivers-mga driver so i upgraded to 7.0, but apparently it still needs the mga_hal module. i tried symlinking /usr/X11R6 to /usr as in the wiki on the offchance it would work, but no success. the old matrox driver package won't install, recognizing that it's an incompatible version of X.
but i wonder, why is there even an mga module if it won't work without mga_hal? has anyone gotten a matrox card to work with 7.0? if not, is there a way to downgrade back to the old xorg (and to be able to upgrade the rest of the system past the ttf-bitstream-conflict)?
>>edit: it seems that the mga_hal module is just for drm, so it's not that. but i switched to the vesa driver and that's working, but the desktop won't load as my user, only as root. it works as a new user, so there's something in my user configs that's blocking it from loading i guess. maybe some kind of font problem? nothing useful that i can see in the Xorg.log, only a lone message at the end that googling says is not a big deal, "FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing."
unless anyone had something similar happen when upgrading to 7.0, i guess i'll just make a new user dir and start loading things in until i can find out what's blocking it. i must have some weird custom thing in there somewhere. ![]()

mga_hal won't work with Xorg7 in the way it is supplied by Matrox. The module is needed to get DVI, TV-Out and dualscreen working on matrox cards.
I have this module working on my system without problems, but I had to hack in their "source" to get it going. Their license does not allow me to distribute a changed version of mga_hal, so I have to make a bad wrapper package that compiles the stuff in postinstall ![]()

okay, thanks anyway. appreciate the response. i think i will just stick with the vesa drivers until (if/when) matrox releases any for 7.0, as they seem to be working fine and i don't particularly need 3D right now.
if you wanted to post or email me the procedure by which you hacked it, i think that would be allowed, though, wouldn't it? but not necessary unless you have the time, b/c as i said, vesa is working okay for my needs at the moment. thanks.
