Been setting up an old computer that I hadn't touched in a while; bought a new wifi card (Qualcomm Atheros AR9227) yesterday, and got it up and running, put it through a system update, everything worked fine. After rebooting, it would no longer connect, either through wicd or NetworkManager. (Wicd fails after the "Authenticating" step; nm-cli fails after (Getting IP configuration).
I tried to follow the steps from the wiki, but when I do
wpa_supplicant -i wlp5s0 0c /etc/wpa_supplicant/example.conf
I get:
Succesfully initialized wpa_supplicant
wlp5s0: Failed to initialize driver interface
lsmod finds ath9k, ath9k_common and ath9k_hw.
Both wicd and NetworkManager are recognizing the wifi card as well as several wireless networks - they just won't connect to them.

Which drivers does the card support, and have you tried an alternate?

I'm not 100% sure where to look for that information, but the only other options I've found is ath5k and one that's listed as obsolete - I'd have to get the computer online before I could install that, though, and it'll be a while before I get it plugged in directly.
I did manage to get my hands on an external/USB wifi card, which responds in exactly the same way - Failed to initialize driver interface.

The most likely cause of this is having insufficient privileges for the interface driver. Try running as root or with sudo:
sudo wpa_supplicant -i wlp5s0 0c /etc/wpa_supplicant/example.conf
Apologies for the necrobump but this it the top Google search result for the error and might save people some time.
