No graphics on installation

Newly installed arch successful including grub for booting various installed OSs, but no graphics.  Haven't found how to fix but possibly could if a kind soul would translate the following Xorg.log for me.

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.

I've tried to learn the above items, but it seems difficult for a non-guru, whereas all the installation instructions are really very explicit and clear.

Re: No graphics on installation

What graphics hardware do you have? How exactly are you starting X? If you're using a .xinitrc, post it.

Re: No graphics on installation

Do you have a video driver installed?

Do:

lspci -nn | grep -i vga

To see what hardware you have.  Post that back here and also state whether you also have the driver installed for it.

Re: No graphics on installation

The log indicates that it is ati hardware, but no drivers were installed.  Please follow the wiki through the post installation steps provided in the beginner's guide.

Re: No graphics on installation

Trilby, and other, thanks. I just installed the ATI driver (I must have installed the xf86-video-intel before).  The wiki then says that X can be started manually, which I did and got the message

xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

When I first installed Arch months ago the question of starting X didn't arise - seemed to be there automatically.  Am now reinstalling because a mistake with an exterior disk fouled that Arch up.

This is incorrect (and impossible).  Either someone else installed it all for you, or you did not actually install archlinux but rather some other distro like archbang (upon checking your post history this suspicion seems to be confirmed).  I also can't help but suspect that for your current install of archlinux you used some guide on someone's blog or perhaps youtube to install.  Please ensure you read through the following pages:

Re: No graphics on installation

Trilby, pardon me.  I erred in installing the ati driver (-Ss instead of -S).  Now that it is in, startx screens come up.
I actually have studied (but obviously not absorbed or remembered) all three of the pages that you direct me to - there is a lot in them.
I have installed 4 versions of debian and used them over a decade but am a complete do-it-yourselfer with no computer training.  I looked at archbang (may have installed and immediately removed - I forget) but installed arch completely by myself and configured it the way I wanted despite complications with colors (xresources if I remember rightly).  For someone as untrained as I, the excellent arch wiki instructions don't always register, so yes, I have also followed outside (simplified) guides.  I apologize.

Next step: how to get started.  The wiki says: Newer versions of Xorg are auto-configuring, you should not need to use this.

Re: No graphics on installation

As a short summary:
1. Install xorg (just the basic, see wiki)
2. $ startx
3. if startx produces an error, see the log about why. it usually is...
4. install the driver for your card.
5. $ startx
6. if there is another error go back to 4 a couple of times unless you are sure you have the correct driver and not a brain glitch. then slowly start assuming you need configuration. Slowly. The X autodetection is robust.

Re: No graphics on installation

Still going nuts with this installation.  Have gotten to a display of large letters in the center of the screen saying "Failed to execute login command".  Slim.log says

waiting for xserver to begin accepting connections

Hours of wiki reading and googling led me to believe that .xinitrc is needed.  But there is no .xinitrc and in fact nothing at all in the home directory, nor is there anything in /etc/skel.  Man pages say that useradd and/or usermod can be used to populate the home directory, but they didn't work for me.

slim uses .xinitrc.   Since you refuse to post your .xinitrc file, we cannot help you.

I highly doubt that.  Please stop posting your (incorrect) inferences from data, instead post the data (the commands you use, the results they provide).  For example, post the output of the following two commands:

ls -a ~

cat ~/.xinitrc

Re: No graphics on installation

Have you installed a desktop environment or a window manager?  If not, see: Here, pick one and then put in .xinitrc the command to start the one you chose - see the wiki page of whatever you decide on.

Re: No graphics on installation

And also, SLiM is a very poor choice for a login manager.  It doesn't have full systemd integration which Arch depends on.  Personally, I use lightdm.

That's not right.

On my system:

empty@Arch ~ % ls -a /etc/skel
./ .bash_logout .bashrc .xinitrc .xsession
../ .bash_profile .screenrc xombrero.conf .zshrc

What is your output for that command?

It may be illuminating for us to see the output of `uname -a` as well...

Re: No graphics on installation

Head_on_a_Stick, as aluded to by the same statement about the home directory, it seems hilltownboy is not listing 'dot' files and concludes that there is nothing there.

The only real problem here seems to be that there is no ~/.xinitrc.  The wiki provides very clear instructions on how this file can be created or copied from the templates.  Until this is done, and the OP reports back, there is no more troubleshooting to be done.

Trilby is right, I did not realize that skel only contained dot files.  To further reply to Head_on_a_Stick:

Linux Arch 3.17.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Dec 7 23:58:19 UTC 2014 i686 GNU/Linux

And to headkase: slim (despite its inadequacies) and openbox were sufficient for my previous installation

Re: No graphics on installation

I'm not sure what Headcase is alluding to regarding systemd integration (works fine here), but slim is abandon-ware these days, it's only a matter of time before it stops working correctly. I would recommend against using it on a fresh installation.

Trilby, dare I say "I love you", looks like I'll be in business yet.  What comes up with the right click is a menu (openbox I think)  of all the things not installed yet, except in the case of  xterm which is available.

Re: No graphics on installation

It depends which Desktop Environment you would prefer. There are several group. I.e.

# pacman -S lxde

For a menu bar and systray. Then you may have to correct your ~/.xinitrc to change to exec startlxde

do it good first, it will be faster than do it twice the saint wink
