[SOLVED] Gnome 3 crashing and other woes...

Hi, all! After backing off from Arch after my Syslinux boot fiasco, I decided to pick Arch back up and redo it. This time I was able to install everything the correct way the first time (which is amazing, considering I had to reinstall 4 times on my first round...).

Now, after installing everything I need for the base system, I decided to pick up a desktop environment. I have tried Xfce4 (which is good, no doubt), but GNOME 3 is very attractive, so I am intent on keeping GNOME as my default window manger.

However, I came to halt after GNOME crashes my system, so I had to look around the forums for a solution to my dilemma. I am guessing the problem I'm having is a driver problem. I think it is because I keep playing with mesa, nvidia, and nouveau; installing and uninstalling the packages doesn't solve anything.

After looking around, I installed the mesa utilities package and now another problem arises from glxgears...

Error: couldn't open display (null)

I consulted this thread and tried installing ConsoleKit, which at the moment, is outdated.

Information on my graphic chip...

00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)

(If I do have to re install everything (which is probably what I do to fix everything...), I am fully prepared to do so. I copied all packages on to a flash drive for that purpose).

Some other things I looked up on...

http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe … 4875/en-us (looks like there is no linux driver for me..)

Hello matierpixel smile

I have a pc with this graphics card and suffered from a similar problem. I solved the problem by applying the tip described in this article: http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2012/04/so … -with.html. In particular, read the section that explains about the xorg config file, at the end of the article.

Hey, Beauvoir! First of all, thanks for your help!

I'm still seeing GNOME crash on me, so I am considering that nouveau isn't the best driver for it. I'm going to try mesa and the nvidia drives to see if that works.

EDIT: I can see the login screen, which surprisingly works, however using the desktop will freeze the system after the first minutes of usage.

The login screen worked for me too, only the system froze before applying the tip of the article. If you need the nouveau driver some day, try adding in xorg config file, beyond 'ShadowFB' quoted in the article

Option "NoAccel" "On"

The effects of gnome shell will not work correctly, but may resolve.
In my case, also migrated to nvidia driver because I did not like the performance provided by the nouveau driver with this graphics card, unfortunately hmm

Thanks for the info, but like you said, I also migrated to the NVIDIA drivers. Everything got fixed now. Thanks for the help, though!
