Connecting Arch to Windows 7 with crossover cable

I am trying to connect a laptop running Arch to a laptop running Windows 7.  Ultimately, I want to play Minecraft in a world shared on LAN across the cable.  Tried setting the IP address of each computer, then the default gateway of the each computer to the IP of the other, and it didn't work.  I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.  Can anyone help?

Please detail not just what I need to do, but why and how it works; I am trying to learn more about Arch and networking as I go.

Re: Connecting Arch to Windows 7 with crossover cable

Normally you just assign each computer an IP (or let them pick one themselves) and leave the gateway as it is, then you should be able to ping the other machine (e.g. "ping 192.168.1.2") and get a response. I don't think crossover cables are needed anymore if at least one computer has a gigabit network card because those should auto-detect crossover.

But for Minecraft you also need Internet connectivity, don't you? So I would recommend getting a cheap five-port gigabit switch for your deskop, plug one port into the DSL modem/home router and connect the latops. Now you should have a LAN, plus fast pings between the two machines because the connection runs over the switch.

No idea about a crossover cable... Do you not have a simple router?

You could go buy a premade crossover cable, but you reverse the pairs on one end.

I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...
