Gnome 3.14 with Xmonad

I just finished installing Gnome 3.14 with GDM and have been following the guide at:

https://vec.io/posts/use-arch-linux-and … na-display

When I run xmonad in a terminal window, I'm getting the following error:

X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)
Major opcode of failed request: 2 (X_ChangeWindowAttributes)
Serial number of failed request: 7
Current serial number in output stream: 8

I ran:

xmonad --recompile

to generate the xmonad-x86_64-linux file inside .xmonad. Is there anything else I need to do?

After googling several other (outdated) websites, it looks like that for newer gnome distros (I have 3.14) you cannot replace the windows manager (metacity) with Xmonad? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've almost given up trying...but would really like to check out what Xmonad is all about.

Re: Gnome 3.14 with Xmonad

afaik you have to use mutter as window manager with gnome-shell, and there's no way to change that.

however it's possible to use xmonad (or any other WM) with rest of the gnome stack apart from the shell itself. You simply need to create custom ~/.xinitrc that starts the WM and any other applications want to autostart. That's also documented in the guide you linked, and in the arch wiki.

Re: Gnome 3.14 with Xmonad

You have to use Gnome's native window manager to use the Gnome Shell in turn (as it is essentially a mutter plugin).  May have been different prior to the 3.x releases, where Gnome was more modular in nature.
