Hi,
whenever I connect my laptop (with Arch and Mate DE) to an external monitor using an HDMI cable,
I have to manually open the Display settings to activate the external monitor, set the right resolution and duplicate my screen.
Moreover, I have to go in the sound settings and select the HDMI in the hardware tabs.
While everything works fine, I would like to automate this steps. How can I do that?
Thanks a lot in advance for the help,
Luca.

I dont have answer to your question but for me it works without doing anything. i.e. just attach HDMI cable and audio / video automatically comes via television.

Hi amish, do you use Mate as well? Or do you have any program that handles this?
To me everything works, but I just have to do all the switching manually...

Oh sorry, I was not aware that Mate DE is different desktop environment. I thought Mate was name of Laptop brand.
I use KDE.

I had this issue under DWM when I used an Arch system on a USB stick at my Dad's house through his mahoosive TV -- I had to put an xrandr command in my .xinitrc.
You could do the same with whatever startup file MATE parses (.xprofile?).

Thanks Head on a Stick.. could you elaborate a bit more please? I wouldn't know what to do now... (I had to set a .xinit file, is that similar to .xprofile?)

If you are starting MATE using ~/.xinitrc just put the xrandr command in that file before the `exec mate-session` bit; if you are using a display manager you will have to put it in ~/.xprofile

Thanks, I'll give it a try!
