GPU has fallen off the bus.

I experienced a weird problem for which I don't know the reason. A few months ago I had this problem which if I have to describe it, this is how it happens:
While I'm surfing, coding or playing a game, X dies (freezes) and the monitor goes black losing connection with the GPU. I saw the GPU message in dmesg and after a few more times it happened, I opened my PC, disassembled everything to clean the dust. Afterwards everything went okay, back to normal. Today, I experienced the problem again while playing a game and logged in through ssh to get some logs. Here's what I got:

# dmesg

After a reboot, things are back to normal again, but I never found out the reason for this. I'm open to suggestions what might went wrong.

Re: GPU has fallen off the bus.

You're not alone on this it seems, a quick search lead me to an older thread on nVidia forums where several users are complaining about it and links to other threads. Some say that changing minimal powermizer state from 0 to 1 solved it for them (see last post of the thread).

There is also this, and to be honest, it reminds me of random blackscreens I was getting on my 8600m GT and a 260GTX until the screen stayed black not even showing the BIOS screen (PC still booted fine though). In the end I solved it by "baking" my GPUs to re-solder the chip to the mainboard. Both continued to work fine since then. The 8600m GT runs on arch now as you can see from my signature, and no problems with it so far.

May I also add I find the error message sounds hilarious.

edit: found this.

Re: GPU has fallen off the bus.

We have had this problem in our GPU cluster (built using consumer-grade cards) for several years. As far as I can tell, it's a hardware fault. Rebooting usually "fixes" it for a time, but the problem recurs out of the blue. Reseating often seems to help, though I have my suspicions that this is a placebo effect. Our long-term "solution" is to simply replace the cards.

Re: GPU has fallen off the bus.

Is there a way to reload the module and the GPU somehow in order to avoid rebooting?

EDIT: I found those topics you link to before posting this thread and to tell you the truth, I'm not in for it. As said in one of the topics, they propose to toggle the GPU's power consumption to be high all the time, which isn't good at all! I'll stick with the defaults if no solution is found.

Re: GPU has fallen off the bus.

There is also the rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1 parameter mentioned in the last link I edited, you could try setting that on runtime to see if it fixes the issue.

Reloading modules: see this.

Re: GPU has fallen off the bus.

Hi, I've been a long-time bumblebee user and for me just specifying that rcutree parameter was not enough, I'd still have a maybe 1-in-3 chance of getting the "GPU has fallen off the bus" error, requiring me to restart the PC (no reloading possible from what I know).
What fixed it, was compiling a custom kernel from ABS, with this little patch, that sets CONFIG_HZ to 1000 instead of the default 300 in the file "config.x86_64":

--- config.x86_64_	2014-09-12 00:06:39.000000000 +0200
+++ config.x86_64	2014-09-12 20:47:54.135043831 +0200
@@ -508,9 +508,10 @@
 CONFIG_SECCOMP=y
 # CONFIG_HZ_100 is not set
 # CONFIG_HZ_250 is not set
-CONFIG_HZ_300=y
+#CONFIG_HZ_300=y
 # CONFIG_HZ_1000 is not set
-CONFIG_HZ=300
+CONFIG_HZ_1000=y
+CONFIG_HZ=1000
 CONFIG_SCHED_HRTICK=y
 CONFIG_KEXEC=y
 # CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP is not set

This fixed the problem _100%_. (I also have the rcutree kernel option enabled, I haven't actually tested this patch without that option.)
Good luck!
