A couple of issues here:
I have created a symbolic link to /dev/ttyS1 and then used the 'Query modem' feature in kppp. It connected to the modem (flashing lights an'all) and created the dialup script. From this point on kppp has been unable to connect to the modem :? Even following the query process, it cannot find the modem.
On reboot the /dev/modem device no longer exists, I have to recreate the link again.
Any light on the above issues would be very helpful.
Thanks.

Are you using a special modem driver package (ltmodem, slmodem, etc) or just the kernel driver?
About the disappearing symlink, you'll need to create a udev rule to make it permanent. This one is taken from the ltmodem PKGBUILD (I haven't tested it so it may not work):
Create a /etc/udev/rules.d/modem.rules file. Put
KERNEL=="ttyS[0-9]", NAME=="%k", MODE=="0660", GROUP=="tty", SYMLINK+="modem"
in it.

I am not using a winmodem. It is a proper hardware modem. It has been successfully used with various incarnations of Mandrake and Slackware (though similar problems arose with Slackware 10.2, which I guess is the udev issue).
Thanks for the udev pointer for the symlink. I just need to sort out why the device is being so temperamental.

Snowman,
The udev fix works a treat Thanks.
Unfortunately the modem doesn't :cry:
I am thinking of installing wvdial to see whether I have any success there. I just don't get it though, having set-up many machines over the years using kppp, it has been a real pig recently.

Are all the required modules loaded?
Does the order that these modules are loaded matters? The new udev loads modules in parallel so it might break things. If that's the case, post the modules and the order they need to be loaded.
