I made the switch to Arch on my very last Windows box this weekend, which also happens to be my gaming rig (i5-2500k, Geforce 660TI) . The requirement was to be able to run World of Warcraft at an acceptable speed, so I installed the CSMT build of wine and was pretty impressed by the results using the most recent proprietary Nvidia driver.
I got 60fps in most areas, however turning my character resulted in a considerable loss of fps (usually down to 30, if I kept rotating the camera it would drop down to the low 20s). At this point I was using openbox, trying my luck with and without compton, the results were pretty constant.
Later that day I gave Cinnamon a shot and thought performance would be a lot worse... instead, the frame rate was a lot more stable, rarely dropping below 50fps.
I tried to reproduce these results using gputest, but the few tests that did run were pretty even on both openbox (a bit slower when compton was active, of course) and cinnamon.
I'd really like to use a simple window manager, so I'd love to know why Cinnamon would work better for my games than using a window manager without a compositor?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated ![]()
(I also tried awesome, which gave me just as mediocre results as using openbox...)
