Thinkpad 430s shutting down when switching from AC to battery

Worked fine until recent update - now when the ac cable is removed, the computer will immediately shut down.  It won't happen in bios, and if you boot in battery everything works great.
It will happens before starting gnome, so I don't think it's display manager related. I have laptop-tools installed and my best guess is it has something to do with that, but I don't see any settings out of the ordinary or shutdown related. Any ideas or places to keep looking?
