EFI variables won't expose to programs

So I'm installing on my new pc, which has an Asus Z87-Pro mobo. It is a UEFI bios, and under Boot > Secure Boot, the OS Type is Windows UEFI mode.

However, when I boot, and run the command efivar -l, I get the following error:

efivar: error listing variables: Function not implemented

The most I've found to try to fix it myself is to modprobe efivarfs before "arch-chrooting" into the new system, but this hasn't had any effect at all. I've also checked /sys/firmware, and there is no EFI folder. I checked that both before and after arch-chrooting.

I'm really not sure what else to add. I know this system should be capable to run UEFI based systems, as it even says on the motherboard box that it is Windows 8.1 ready.

If you need more information, let me know.

Re: EFI variables won't expose to programs

You are not booted in EFI-mode.

Can you disable Secure Boot -- it could be falling back to "Legacy" mode in the absence of a correctly signed kernel image and bootloader.

I have seen quite a few problems with ASUS motherboards -- some have had to be returned to the factory for a firmware chip replacement to disable Secure Boot.

Otherwise, you could just install in non-EFI mode -- you are unlikely to notice the difference...
