Hi there, I installed Arch Linux today, but I cannot run X server. I followed this tutorial: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg
My notebook has a SiS chipset. I installed xf86-video-sis and xf86-video-sisusb. I copied /etc/X11/xorg.conf from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SiS
My /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf looks like this:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "sis"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Device0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768_75.00"
EndSubSection
EndSectionWhen I try to execute startx, I get the following error (I don't run it as root):
(EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing file.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server errorThe file /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks like this:

It seems that SiS wiki page is rather old (it refers to rc.conf & kernel 3.7) -- have you tried running without an xorg configuration file?
Please post the output of:
lspci -knn|grep -iA3 vgaJin, Jîyan, Azadî

have you tried running without an xorg configuration file?
Now I removed the 50-monitor.conf file and xorg.conf file and startx ran almost successfully, but there is still one big issue- it has a small display resolution (640*480), although my resolution should be 1028*768. The log now looks like this (by the way, thank you for answer):

It is using the Frame Buffer. Generally not the best choice ![]()

As I said in the original post, I have a SiS chipset. I have installed all xf86-video-* drivers, including xf86-video-sis. Now I tried to remove the frame buffer (xf86-video-fbdev) and the X sever failed to start again. It seems like the sis driver does not work.

Hello,
I do not know wghich graphic card you have, but I remember that I had lot of issues with sis long time ago. What saved my life was this package:
aur/xf86-video-sis671
Please, let us know which graphic card you have exactly.

I tried to install it, but it fails when I try to build the package, it seems that this package is no longer available.
Please post the output of:

Update: I successfully installed the suggested package (aur/xf86-video-671, or rather, xf86-video-671-git, which can be installed without any issues). When I type startx, it doesn't recognize the driver. I copied the 50-monitor.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d again and the string "sis" replaced by "sisimedia". Then, when I ran startx, I got a black screen and I had to turn my notebook off. (One second before my screen froze, a cursor in the right resolution appeared on the screen)

We would like to help you but logs are necessary to do it.
Please, post the xorg log and let see if we can find the error. I know that this vga was really tricky. I remember that gaves me a lot of problems but... fortunately, I changed my laptop ![]()

I'm not expert but...
what you have on .xinitrc?
Looks like there is a segmentation fault and I'm not expert on that but looking at other webs I found some people having issues as well.
If I remember fine, on the old days I used the sismedia driver not the sisi one... but do not know if that has changed.

I don't think that the problem is in the .xinitrc script, because, as I said, I'm able to run the X server if I use the xf86-video-fbdev driver, but the resolution is wrong when I use it. However, my .xinitrc file looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
# exec gnome-session
exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choiceOffline
That log shows a crash in EXA. It seems the xf86-video-sis671-git driver lacks has the necessary fixes for that. So disable EXA - in your config, add this to the Device section
Option "ShadowFB" "true"If that won't do, you'll probably have more luck getting xf86-video-sisimedia to work, however that one was just put into AUR because it doesn't compile with xorg-server-1.17, so you'd need to fix the driver for that.
Another option is to use xf86-video-sis671-git, but apply the patch used with xf86-video-sis that disables the UploadToScreen and DownloadFromScreen hooks (that's where the EXA crash is).

Thank you very much! It almost works. Only one small issue- there are some weird shadows around KDE panels, like on the screenshot below:

That screenshot looks like issues with rendering transparency. This makes me think you have KDE configured to use compositing. Disable it.
Another thing to try, compile xf86-video-sis671-git with this patch, it should make EXA work. In theory. And no idea if the patch even applies.
