[solved] Can't input encrypted root logical volume password

I've managed to fumble my way through the installation process with luks on lvm partitioned disk. However, when I boot the actual operating system it outputs this;
A password is required to access the /dev/mapper/lvm-lvroot volume:
Which is to be expected, but about half a second later it outputs this;
[    2.44.11.32] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdd] No Caching mode page found
[    2.44.11.61] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdd] Assume drive cache: write though
So I enter my password below that text and press enter and the cursor just sits there. Doesn't matter what else I type the console is just frozen. Is there something wrong with my SSD? I shredded it before installation to try to secure it further like the arch drive preperation wiki said. Have I screwed it up somehow?

Is sdd an external drive? Some details of your setup would be helpful...

Re: [solved] Can't input encrypted root logical volume password

the SSD is not external. My system has one ssd and two hdds with a 40 G root volume, 32G tmp and swap volumes that are all kept on the ssd, and a home volume that spans across the hdds. I use luks over lvm to encrypt my system with a password for root and a key for the home volume. I don't know what to tell you other than that, if you need any other details I'd be happy to supply them if you have something specific you need to know.

The partition table for a start. What is sdd? Note, I'm not typing ssd, but the drive that is appearing in your boot message...

Oh, I was too tired to even realize that said 'sdd' instead of 'ssd'. In this case sdd was the usb stick for archiso. I removed it when booting and that fixed the issue. However the issue with the password not being accepted still remains.

I have three disks, sda (the ssd), sdb (1 tb hard drive) and sdc ( 2 tb hard drive). I have a 200 MB boot partition as /dev/sda1, and the rest of the space allocated to /dev/sda1. I also have all of the space on the hard disks allocated to /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdc1. I have a volume group spanning from /dev/sda2 to /dev/sdb1 to /dev/sdc1 name 'lvm'. Within that I have a 40 gb root logical volume on /dev/sda2, a 32 gb swap logical volume on /dev/sda2, and a 32 gb tmp logical volume on /dev/sda2 as well. I have the entirety of the hard disks assigned to a 'home' logical volume that spans from /dev/sdb1 to /dev/sdc1.

My machine is on a different computer so I can't copy and paste anything, and I doubt copying the outputs of a command would be of much readability.

Please paste your mkinitcpio.conf and the output of `blkid`.

sorry if there are some typos, I had to copy all that by hand. I assumed the hooks and maybe modules were all you needed form the mkinicpio.conf.

Re: [solved] Can't input encrypted root logical volume password

Please use code tags when pasting to the boards: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … s_and_Code

If this is LUKS on LVM, as you say in your first post, then the order of your hooks is wrong:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm … initcpio_3

Also, I add the filesystem modules to mkinitcpio.conf just to ensure they are included in the initrd.

I modified the order slightly in hopes that would fix it, I was hoping to not mess anything up but I guess I did. What is out of place exactly and what order do I need to put the hooks in?

Specifically what modules do I need to add to my mkinitcpio file? And how do I include them in the initrd?

Re: [solved] Can't input encrypted root logical volume password

Read my edited post: I have included the link.

Also, read the mkinitcpio wiki page, it describes how to add modules to your intrd. As for which ones you need, I have no idea, presumably vfat and ext4.

I've put lvm2 before encrypt and added 'ext4', 'vfat' and 'fat' to modules. The issue of having my password not registering is still there.

Did you rebuild the initrd?

If you're talking about

 mkinitcpio -p linux

then yes, I did do that.

Re: [solved] Can't input encrypted root logical volume password

Well I got sick of troubleshooting and just wiped the volume group and reinstalled the system. The OS seems to be working fine now... I don't know what went wrong.
