Re: pacman error

sounds like your arch install doesn't have internet access.  Can you ping yahoo.com?

Check your eth0 config on /etc/rc.conf.

If you use dhcp set it to eth0="dhcp".

Re: pacman error

Most of the files you edit in are located in /etc.

As for getting a gui installed, see:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … igure_xorg
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg7

Then install gnome using:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome

Be sure that your system is upgraded before installing these though.

Re: pacman error

alright one more thing, i installed the xorg and gnome, but when do startx i get and error that says:
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 28: twm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 29: xclock: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 30: xterm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 31: xterm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 32: excec: xterm: not found

waint for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc :unscaled" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

Re: pacman error

Add:

exec gnome-session

to ~/.xinitrc
Create the file if it doesn't exist.

BTW, twm is in  xorg-twm. You don't need it if you use gnome. If you want to use xclock or xterm:

pacman -S xorg-apps xterm

Re: pacman error

alright that worked perfectly, but i do have a couple more questions
1. when i create a new user how do i make a home diretory for him
2. when i run startx w/ new user i get
xauth: time out in locking authority file //.serverauth.20341
xauth: time out in locking authority file //.Xauthority
xauth: time out in locking authority file //.Xauthority
xauth: time out in locking authority file //.Xauthority
then it just has the same errors as b4 (might be because of the home directory thing...idk)
3. i accidently hit the wrong timezone how do i change it?

Re: pacman error

redbeard:
1. add new users with

useradd yourusername

instead of

adduser yourusername

You will be asked for home-dirs, default shell, etc..

2. Could be because of the home-dir thing.

3. You should try tzselect and/or ntp (for syncing your time with a ntp-server)

Because I'm not at my Arch Box atm I couldn't try out anything to prove if my answers are correct..

Cheers Sigi

Re: pacman error

Could you please post your .xinitrc
also post the output of

pacman -Qs -- -font

and maybe if you can access the PC vi ssh or anything else to get the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and pastebin it
you may also want to take a look to my installation guide, it might help you through debugging the problem --> Install Arch Linux

Re: pacman error

try this

pacman -S xorg-fonts-100dpi xorg-fonts-75dpi

u need at least one of them but since u don't know the resolution yet, add both

if your X has started, type
xdpyinfo | grep resolution in a terminal there, it will tell you what resolution u have, u must keep the one that is closer to the resolution (100 or 75) and it's safe to remove the other one, I kepp both, it's up to u, hopefully it will work

Re: pacman error

In your ~/.xinitrc, you need to uncomment
exec gnome-session
to start gnome.

I don't think you need them if all your apps use ttf fonts. In my case, I installed them for emacs.  I could've configured emacs to use other fonts but didn't bothered.  roll
