Hi to everyone,
today I've upgraded my plasma 5 installation to 5.2.1 but after rebooting and log-in I only get this:
It seems a problem related to plasmashell because If I kill plasmashell and manually restart it, it actually start working.
I've tried to move the .kde4/ and ./config/plasma* folders without any success....
What can I do now?

There was something similar but happening in a different wm/de environment. In that case, the problem was something that was in their autostart.
So, perhaps you have something being started by plasmashell that either relies on something else that hasn't started yet or broke with the update.

And your logs say what?

Looks like mine is likely caused by a video driver issue. Invalid ELF headers. Being that I have an nvidia video card, and play games, there's not really any options other than the binary driver.

I'm having the same problem too on one of my notebook, with a radeon hd5650 (and open radeon driver).
There are lots of graphical issues, like application launcher without bottom tabs, "exit screen" all black, klipper all black, and no "breeze-themed" alt - tab.
On my other 2 laptops with intel hd4000 video card everything is fine.

I can confirm the same on my laptop with a Radeon HD 5730 using the open source drivers.

I had the same problem but for me it was not due to the plasma update but due to the update of qt5 from 5.4.0 => 5.4.1. So i downgrade all the qt5* packages and now all the graphical issues are gone.
Hope this temporary workaroud helps...
NOTA : i use nouveau as graphical driver

Yep, i thought the same (ie i wasn't so sure plasma 5.1 was to be blamed).
Thanks for the info, gonna downgrade right now!

Is there a bug report filed for this ?

What command fixes this update? Downgrade all qt5 pkgs how? Is that the best we can do for this issue? I'm running as vbox guest. Mines not driver related.

see wiki: Downgrading packages. Usually the way described in section 2.1 ("Official packages") should work for you. The simple way is to downgrade one by one package (qt5-base, qt5-declarative and so on) to the version before the current one in your cache directory (likely it is 5.4.0-3). See
pacman -Q | grep qt5-
to get a list of all your qt5 packages.
Afterwards be sure to follow the advice in section 4.2 (IgnorePkg).
A friend of mine had a problem with plasma5 and this workaround helped.
No, this is not the best to do. This is just a workaround. The best to do is to report to the relevant developers, which may be the KDE, Qt, Graphics drivers, ... devs. That depends on where the problem really is. If I understand correctly that is not really clear. The fact that downgrading the Qt packages fixes the problem does not necessarily mean that the root problem is living in the Qt5 libs.

I haven't encountered this issue and I'm also using the proprietary NVIDIA driver and Qt 5.4.1.
It seems a problem related to plasmashell because If I kill plasmashell and manually restart it, it actually start working.
How do you start Plasma in the first place? I use xinit/startx and "exec startkde" in .xinitrc.

Had this issue too in vmware, downgrading qt5 worked.
What it was very strange is that a opensuse tumbleweed vm that I have upgraded plasma and qt too a few days ago... exact same issue. But their current version is qt 5.4.0 and plasma 5.2.0, so I'm not sure that it is qt 5.4.1 problem. Maybe some dependency when qt its built?

Same problem for me, running Arch in virtual box on an iMac. Screen is either black or black + white lower border. There is a flash of desktop background before this. Happened just after upgrade to plasma 5.2. Tried upgrading VB from 4.3.22 to 4.3.24 but no different; I think it's a plasma problem.

Trying to file a bug on the Arch bug tracker but can't get registered... will let you know as soon as it's filed

Bug filed in Arch, not sure if it is Arch or upstream though:

Looks like it will be fixed soon according to the bug report:
Issue is not in Qt 5, but frameworks 5.7.0
All mentioned problems are gone with a frameworks 5.8.0 build, makes no difference if that is build on Qt 5.4.0 or Qt 5.4.1.
Frameworks 5.8.0 will be available for all (not just packagers as is now) this Tuesday.

Since no-one seem to have found it being more then just an archlinux issue:
http://kaosx.us/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=911
As shown there, it effects at least 2 more distributions.

Finally....after however many days....I enabled testing repo and updated my vbox vm and startx brings up my desktop.
Seems stable for now. Others can try this or wait for kf 5.8.0 to hit the stable repos.

Good to know it works duder2. I'll wait until stable as the workarounds are easy enough

@mcpalls - What kind of drivers are you using? You upgrated not only KF5, but kernel (from 3.18.6 to 3.19.2), too.
And yours problem isn't associated with Plasma 5.2.1, I think.
