Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

What is your hardware, how have you set it up and which drivers have you installed?

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

The error message you put in your title is not found anywhere in that log.  Is there other information you are not providing?  The error in the log seems to be that there is no properly configured video driver.  What is your video card (hardware) and which drivers have you installed?  Are you using the open source ATI or proprietary?  If the latter, what have you done to configure it?

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

The error message within my title is when I try and run xinit gnome-session and the output says to check the log file and after it says to check log file, it says unable to connect to x server

My video card is a r9 290x and I installed the lib32-mesa-libgl package which includes the open source xf86-video-ati.

From the wiki i read about the driver, it says xorg does it automatically

Xorg will automatically load the driver and it will use your monitor's EDID to set the native resolution. Configuration is only required for tuning the driver.

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

That's correct.  The open source driver shouldn't need any config.  I see there are a handful of other drivers installed too, including fbdev.  I don't quite see why/how it would happen, but there is a thread with the same drm error message on the gentoo forums that had a response suggesting that fbdev can cause problems with ati.  Perhaps removing fbdev would help (it is not needed).

But just to gather some more information, can you post the output of the following two commands:

pacman -Qs xf86-video
lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

Why do you have all those drivers intalled?  I'm not sure if that'd cause this problem, but you shouldn't have all of those.  Remove all those drivers except xf86-video-ati, then see if the error persists.

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

Looking at the config files that xorg is using, I found a file labeled "nvidia-drm-ouputclass.conf
the contents as follows

Section "OutputClass"
            Identifier "nvidia"
            MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
            Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Shouldn't this be an ati driver and how do i change that?

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

When uninstalling with pacman you can use '-Rns', to additionally remove config files from packages (n) and unused deps (s).

Maybe try to remove/rename leftover config files, like the one you found, (renaming, so that they don't end with .conf, they should be ignored) ...

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

My AMD laptop also has that file and the X server works fine -- there is no "Screen" Section in that file (see man 5 xorg.conf).

I think your card may be too new for the non-proprietary driver -- try Catalyst instead.

PigInSpace,

Are you running systemd? If not you need to start xorg as root.

Looks like Im going to have to do this anyways because reading the wiki on the ATI open source driver, it says

The open source driver is currently not on par with the proprietary driver in terms of 3D performance on newer cards

Do you recommend installing catalyst from the AUR or the Unofficial Repositories

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

I am sure I will regret this, but...   Why are you trying to run X as root?
Also, you did not really answer bstaletic's question.  Are you running systemd?  Just because you are running Xorg as root, it does not mean you are not running systemd.

I didn't see anything about starting a daemon for xorg in the wiki.

Also when i booted up today to try and install the proprietary driver, it brought me to a graphical login screen and once logged into that, it brings up a blue screen and I can not exit it to get the terminal.

Also, sorry if I don't completely understand what you guys mean. I can't seem to find much documentation on setting up a graphical dipslay

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

Okay, let's start over.    It sounds like you are  using a display manager that is started by systemd.   This blue log in screen you describe, it is a GUI log in screen that asks you for users and passwords and stuff?   If so, then Xorg is working.
What if you try to log in from that screen?  Please do not use the user root; I will not spend my time supporting logging into Xorg environments as root.  Use a normal user.
When you get that Blue log in screen, you assert you cannot get to the console.  What happens if you press Ctrl-Alt-F2  ? Do you get a console?
If you press Ctrl-Alt-F1, do you get back to the login screen?

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

Okay, let's start over.    It sounds like you are  using a display manager that is started by systemd.   This blue log in screen you describe, it is a GUI log in screen that asks you for users and passwords and stuff?   If so, then Xorg is working.

I know running as root is a bad habit, but I was only running as root when I need to download and configure files that would otherwise require the command sudo.

Ctrl-Alt-F2 brings me back to the terminal screen and Ctrl-Alt-F1 brings me back to the graphical login screen.

When I log onto the graphical display, it shows a blue background with a black bar on time that shows time and on the top left says activities but i can't do anything within it.

Hey, I see you marked the thread solved.  That is great, but what was the magic?

Re: [Solved] Unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

I marked the thread as solved  because I believe i installed gdm, however, i did a bunch of stuff to it and when i rebooted, it no longer gave me the error of not being able to connect to xserver/no screen found.

I don't have an up and running graphical interface, but I decided to downgrade to version 1.6 xorg-server to install the catalyst driver so i can run some 3d accelerated program. Hopefully i won't have any issues with that since the closed source driver can better support newer graphic cards.
