Control keys unusable in terminal

Hi,

I'm new to the Arch forum (but not quite to the distro). I've been dual booting to Arch on my work laptop (Dell Inspiron 3330) for the last year, and for a few month now I have this issue:
- only alphanumeric keys, directional arrows and return key work in fullscreen terminals
    => backslash, tab, ctrl + [any key] , etc. only display a space
    => this means I can't edit commands, auto-completion doesn't work, and I can't enter any escape sequences
- all keys work fine in X (I'm using the KDE environment), including in virtual terminals, which is why I didn't try too hard to solve this
- I have no keyboard related errors in journalctl

When testing backslash with showkey, I got this:
- scancode 0e 8e
- keycode 14 (seems fine)
- symbol/ascii : ef 80 80  (seems to resolve to 3 characters ??)

- my locale is en_US.UTF-8 (but I set some locale variables such as dates or paper type to fr_FR.UTF-8)
- my keymap is set to fr, but loadkeys us doesn't affect this behaviour

Does anyone have any idea how to further investigate / solve this issue ?

My graphical environment is broken since a recent upgrade, and it is **very** frustrating to debug it without completion and backslash... In fact, my system is practically unusable :\

Any help appreciated !

Cheers

Not an Installation issue, moving to NC...
