Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

Hello.

I'm using libreoffice and gnome.

When I open libreoffice gnome/the whole x server crashes. This happens quite random. Sometimes I'm able to open a file and edit it. Sometimes I can't even open libreoffice...

Could this be an error with the graphics driver (xf86-video-ati)?

I've got an almost identical system on a PC with Intel graphics. No Problems there.

Does anybody have an idea?

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

Okay. I have an update:

I couldn't solve the problem itself. I installed libreoffice-still instead of -fresh.

Got no more errors.

However, I'm still interested, why the -fresh version doesn't work on my system. As I said: On my Laptop it runs fine

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

It's me again...

The problem wasn't solved. Gnome-shell/Xorg still crashes when using libreoffice.
Can anyone help?

The PC has got a Radeon R9 270x graphics card. I'm using the opensource driver.
Is it a driver problem?
Every other software is running fine.

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

Please use code tags around log files and terminal outputs, like this: [c⁣ode]<log file>[/c⁣ode].  It makes it easier to read and one doesn't  have to scroll for miles to get to the next post. You can even add the tags to your previous messages by using the 'Edit' link on the bottom line of each post. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … s_and_code

Also, please edit your older post when adding new information, if there have not been any intervening posts.  It makes it easier to gather information in one chunk.

Now to the problem.

It looks like your Samson Go Mic is being recognized as a mouse and keyboard.combination.  This is not good.  Try booting into Gnome without the Go Mic attached and then try LibreOffice.

I would also check for any linux support from Samson.

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

Thanks for the information. I will keep in mind.

I disconnected the microphone and everything's working fine now.
I have a laptop with Intel HD4600 graphics. The microphone and libreoffice work fine on this system. Both systems run the newest packages.

I will check for Linux support. Is there a reason why it only crashes when using libreoffice/eclipse? I can use any other program without crashing Xorg.

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

I found the hint by Googling BUG: triggered 'if (axnum >= dev->valuator->numAxes)'. I feel that you should be able to work around this problem, but I don't have the skills to tell you how to do that.

I already read about that. However, today my Xorg crashed again while using eclipse. The microphone wasn't connected!

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

Same problem with Libreoffice (both -fresh and -still) and Xorg (both with Nouveau and Nvidia drivers).
The freezing occurs after selecting a large portion of text.
Same error messages.

That's interesting. I have an AMD Card. So I would say it's a Xorg problem.
However. A friend of mine has a similar graphics card and the same Arch version. He's got no problems.

But there's still the problem with my microphone. As soon as the microphone is connected Xorg keeps on crashing. Only the error in journalctl is different.
I wasn't able to trigger the error if I connect the microphone after logging in.

Hopefully this problem gets solved. I don't want to change to Windows.

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

I have also experienced this. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I'm also using GNOME, LibreOffice, Nouveau drivers and a USB microphone (Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000). My whole screen freezes when copy/pasting stuff from LibreOffice. I think the ArchWiki said to install a java runtime but that didn't fix it.

The fact that this happens with LibreOffice and Eclipse might mean it has something to do with Java..

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

My Screen doesn't freeze. Xorg crashes and then GDM is starting. Also I've got no problem with copy/paste. It crashes the moment I open libreoffice.
I've got this problem with and without my microphone.

However. Xorg crashes one time and after that I'm able to work without crashes. That's just weird.

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

Okay. I have found an interesting problem. I installed xorg-drivers. After that my System was totally killed. Had to reinstall.

I installed the package. After a reboot xorg crashed instantaneously and restarted again. it started and crashed in a loop. There was no chance to get the console. I could get the logs via chroot. It's a segementation fault. Similar to the one above.

After completely reinstalling the system everything except libreoffice/eclipse works fine.
Please, can anyone help? It's just a shame that something like this happens.

PS: I have a Arch-Stick with xorg. it has also installed the xorg-drivers package to support various computers. It doesn't boot either on this PC.

Should I contact X.org directly?

That's interesting. I didn't expect it to fail in a VM.
What VM are you using?

I switched to the integrated graphics of my CPU.
However, I want to use my external graphics card.

I think I will report this to Xorg.

Shino: Sorry I didn't express myself clearly. It works on my VM (I emulated Ubuntu with VirtualBox). Otherwise it crashes. wink

Re: Gnome crashes when using libreoffice

Hi,

now that the new gnome is released (I don't like it sad sad that they destroyed so many good concepts) I tried my AMD Graphics Card again. I was not able to crash Xorg until now.
Maybe the issue is solved hmm
We will see.

I had the same problem the OP describes and your tip solved my problem.  I use xmonad, and not gnome, by the way.

Thanks, thisoldman!
