Bluetooth connection failed: cannot connect to 'old' smartphone

Hi there. I've followed the wiki to set up a bluetooth connection but I'm stuck at the last step: connection.

This is what I get when trying to connect using bluez and bluetoothctl:

[bluetooth]# connect D8:95:2F:A6:80:A3
Attempting to connect to D8:95:2F:A6:80:A3
Failed to connect: org.bluez.Error.Failed

Investigating journalctl I get:

Mar 20 11:07:46 archlinux bluetoothd[12897]: a2dp-source profile connect failed for D8:95:2F:A6:80:A3: Protocol not available

There's an entry in the wiki on this error but it's specific for a bluetooth headset.

I suspect that my old smartphone is to blame. It's a Motorola Defy, from 2011 I think. Probably bluetooth protocol has changed since then and my smartphone hasn't kept up...

Any hints?
