[SOLVED] Issues with WoW

Hi Guys,

Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this, so please forgive me if it's not. I'm having issues with World of Warcraft running on my 64bit Arch install under Wine. The last time it was run, was on the 22nd March with no issues. My son played on it for most of the day quite happily. Tonight, another matter.

I've checked and WoW was running fine even after some key updates, nvidia driver 346.47-10 updated on the 19th of March and Wine 1.7.39-2 updated on the 22nd March.

OK, so what is happening. I launch WoW by right clicking on Wow.exe in /home/emyr/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/World of Warcraft and selecting run with Wine. The Battle.net login page comes up, I log in, I authenticate and my desktop appears. Checked my router and there is traffic going to the internet. Check the system processes and there is Wine-64.exe in the list of processes. Highlight Wow-64.exe and click on the wrench on the bottom right and sure enough, the process is running and using system resources, except Wine isn't displaying anything on my screen.

So, I thought borked up Wine install. OK, I deleted my .wine directory. ran pacman -Rc wine, ran pacman -Sc and flushed out the cached wine packages. Rebooted my PC and when I logged back in, proceeded to install wine again with it's lib32 dependencies and wine gecko and wine mono. Downloaded the WoW installer and ran it. It installed Battle.net and asked me to log in. Log into my Battle.net account and it asks me to install WoW. I accept the defaults and then the same thing happens, I'm back at my desktop. Check system processes again and sure enough, WoW installer is running and there is activity on my hard disk!

Anybody have any ideas? Wher does Wine keep its logs? Does it log issues with programs? Is this a Wine issue, an nvidia driver issue? To my knowledge there hasn't been any updates for WoW that could have toasted it.

Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] Issues with WoW

run it in terminal and post the output for starters, which is the most likely way to get some info

Re: [SOLVED] Issues with WoW

I think there is something seriously wrong with wine on 64bit platforms. I blitzed my Arch install and put Debian Testing on my box, I did this so I wouldn't be running bleeding edge apps. I installed the nvidia driver (340.65) and wine (1.6.2-20 boy, installing wine is fun on Debian!!). Copied over my wine folder and tried to run World of Warcraft and got the same results as my Arch install as posted above.

I've an old PC which has an old nvidia GeForce 6200 installed on it, but importantly the P4 CPU is 32bit. So I installed Arch and installed the nvidia driver, 304, and installed wine (1.7.39-2). I copied over the exact same WoW folder as I was using in my old 64bit Arch install and Debian Testing 64bit and bang, WoW is working. Admittedly, WoW moans that the GFX card isn't supported anymore and running the game I get a max of 3fps using opengl, but it does work.

That could be, try running it within a WIN32 context https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/wine#WINEARCH

Re: [SOLVED] Issues with WoW

Fixed it. What a bloody polava though! I found what the problem was beacuse of Skype. Skype wouldn't load, so I launched Skype via a terminal and it gave me an error saying that 32bit opengl support wasn't installed. Googling the issue I found that for some reason the libGL 32-bit library wasn't installed. Found this page. But all it provided was a link to the Arch Wiki page about nvidia. So I bit the bullet and reinstalled the nvidia driver, not an easy matter as it took me a few hours to get the nouveau drivers back and working, then I reinstalled the nvidia driver again!

Tried Skype and boom! Skype was working. WoW, no! But, it was now at least displaying the WoW Launcher before crashing. So more Googling and I found this article on webupd8.org. About halfway down the page, there is a section labelled "If the World of Warcraft installer / Battle.net crashes". So I followed the advice and did the library override and what do you know, WoW Launcher works.

And why was WoW running in the background with no display? Blizzard released patch 6.1.2 a few days back and WoW wouldn't lauch without it. So, the problem seems to have been a combination of the update to the nvidia driver (340.65) not installing libGL 32-bit libraries and Blizzard releasing an update!

A big thanks to V1del for trying to help smile

Cheers
