no internet connection when I install

Hello all, I decided to give archlinux a try, and am downloading this: archlinux-2015.03.01-dual.iso , right now. However I noticed in the installation wiki, info, it says I will need to have a internet connection to do the install,.. I may not be able to get a internet connection, during the install, is there a alternative, ? I didn't see any,..
I use a usb mobile broad band device, and it has been my experience, that will not work until after I have installed, and have network manager running,  my experience is with Debian, but I do remember, to my surprise, once when I installed "xubuntu", it did detect the broadband device, and started a connection during the install,...
I suppose I will find out when I try to install, but if anyone has any suggestions, it would be appreciated.
thanks

Re: no internet connection when I install

Try it first.  There are two potential approaches if you can't get network access in the live environment, but neither are very convenient.

The first would be to figure out what packages you need for networking, and get them on an usb or on the internal drive so you can copy them into the live environment.  Install these within the live environment then go from there.  In some cases this might be pretty easy - but if the packages you need only exist in the AUR and/or have a lot of dependencies, it can get to be a hassle quick.

The second would involve downloading all the packages needed to install to a local cache that can be used for the installation.  But this would actually still leave you with the same problem - you could complete the install, but then you'd still need a way to download the packages needed to get your networking up.

We could elaborate on either of these approaches (or perhaps others) if need be, but try out the live iso first.

Re: no internet connection when I install

Or, if you have a smart phone, USB tether it.  It will share whatever wireless connection it has as a "Wired" internet connection with the Linux install.  If the phone is associated with a wifi, it will use that.  If it is using mobile data (4G LTE, for example) it will use that.   On the Linux side, all you need to do (if it does not work out of the box) is to run dhcpcd.

Re: no internet connection when I install

Well I got the ISO, and the CD I burned boots, so now I see more as to what I am getting into, ...the internet connection is the least of my worry now, it seems like I will be able to use the SSH method, using another computer that is online,..but also I now see I need to read a LOT more, and write some notes down, ( no printer available) before I can go any further on this. thanks for the replies, This is going to be a interesting project for me.
thanks all

Re: no internet connection when I install

If our captcha drew you in, and these issues seem like an interesting project, then you've got a great attitude and approach to be successful with archlinux - and I look forward to having you as part of this community.

I gather the last issue mentioned is due to being unable to access the wiki for the installation instructions.  For this, there are two options you can consider.  First, the iso include a text file (I think it's Install.txt or something like that) in the root user's home directory.  This has an overview of the installation process.  It is just an overview though, and targetted at users comfortable installing arch so they can have a reminder/checklist - however, a resourceful new user might be able to use this in conjunction with the various man pages (also on the iso) to get things going.  The second option is that there are a couple of packages that contain a dump of the current wiki contents - if you are downloading packages and moving files around anyway, you might be able to get this to get a local copy of the wiki in the iso environment, then use a text browser (on the iso) to read it in a second tty while you do the install in the first tty.

In any case, good luck, and happy arching.

EDIT: as another option to all of this - if the target machine already has a working system with the right drivers for the adaptor, you could install in a virtual box as the guest OS gets a virtualized ethernet connection.  Then once that is fully up and running you can transfer the vbox guest onto the actual hardware.  Certainly this would be a little less 'fun' but it would be easier.

Re: no internet connection when I install

Thanks

I gather the last issue mentioned is due to being unable to access the wiki for the installation instructions.

, actually I do have access to the wiki, and have gone over the instructions, they seem to be pretty clear, not to hard to follow, How ever for me it is best if I have them right in front of me, while installing,..my memory is so bad,and for the first time, actually it looks like probably after someone has done this a few times they would pretty well have the "steps" memorized, and it would be pretty easy.
So any way, I am going to "copy" the instructions in the wiki, on to a usb stick, and get them printed.

First, the iso include a text file (I think it's Install.txt or something like that) in the root user's home directory.

Yes, it is "install.txt".  I saw that, and read it, that is when I realized, "ok, well I can do this, but there are somethings I need to do first",  like create the partition , etc....

if the target machine already has a working system with the right drivers for the adaptor, you could install in a virtual box as the guest OS gets a virtualized ethernet connection.  Then once that is fully up and running you can transfer the vbox guest onto the actual hardware

That is a idea, I am interested in , the same computer I am using to post this, is  going to be where I install, It has Debian wheezy on it, now, but there is plenty of room to set up another partition, etc. and install.
I have  "localhost" server all ready set up, and even a "virtual" Cpanel, ( Ajenti ) , ok well, I need to go now,   thanks for the feed back,

Re: no internet connection when I install

Last night I did successfully install the arch ISO to a USB stick, using this:

  dd bs=4M if=/home/garry/Downloads/archlinux.iso of=/dev/sdb && sync

It seems to have worked well, the usb stick boots fine,.
Been reading still more on the installation, I also downloaded a "install script", not sure how much it will help, but I think it might.  My problem is I am not very experienced with doing these kind of things from the command line, but ok, well , this is a good time to start learning more.
Now I have sort of a "plan", let me see if I can explain.

 lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 465.8G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 371.4G 0 part /
├─sda2 8:2 0 1K 0 part
├─sda3 8:3 0 50.7G 0 part
├─sda5 8:5 0 4.7G 0 part
└─sda6 8:6 0 39G 0 part
sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom
sdb 8:16 1 14.5G 0 disk
├─sdb1 8:17 1 595M 0 part /media/ARCH_201503
└─sdb2 8:18 1 31M 0 part

This is what I have when I use

lsblk

I want to put archlinux on "sda3" . This partition is all ready formatted, and actually has Debian wheezy on it, however I do not use it, much,  the one I use is the sda1.
sda3 actually is the first option that shows when  grub starts, it was the most recent partition I made, and installed debian too, sda1 is also debian.
I am thinking, wondering what would happen, if I did this ?

  dd bs=4M if=/home/garry/Downloads/archlinux.iso of=/dev/sda3 && sync

Or maybe it doesn't work that way ?
In the instructions it say

(do not append a partition number, so do not use something like /dev/sdb1)

so maybe this is not a good idea ?,
Ok, I have to go now,  In a nutshell,  I would at least like to get arc installed to the sda3 partition,  this partition is all ready formatted and a working partition, so I don't think I need to format it again ?  It does not matter to me much, if at first I can not connect to the internet, as long as I have a partition on the HD that boots, and is archlinux.  I then can work on adding to it as needed, but since I can go online from sda1 or sda6, when I need to ,  I am planning to use archlinux mostly for stuff that can be done offline, the text editor "nano" is fine,  and it will be good for me to learn how to install some programs manually, later. Hope this makes some sense,  Ok well, my wife wants me to do some chores so I have to go for now, ..thanks

You would have a copy of the Arch live ISO on your hard drive.

It is possible to boot such the image from GRUB, but I don't think it would be of much use to you.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … ly_release
http://www.howtogeek.com/196933/how-to- … ard-drive/

If you want to use Arch, you should install it to /dev/sda3 by following the Beginner's Guide carefully (do not use any other guides -- they are all outdated and/or error ridden).
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_guide

You wil need to format the partition to eradicate all the files from your old Debian wheezy system.

Connecting to the internet isn't very difficult -- if you have a wired connection it will probably already be activated in the live environment, if you only have wi-fi use `wifi-menu` to start the connection.

It is not possible to install Arch without an internet connection (AFAIK).

Re: no internet connection when I install

I learned about arch linux around 2 days back from youtube... previously ubuntu for around 2 yrs now...
i want to try arch linux...
but i want to go for offline installation
reason:
1. internet speed around 15kb/s at my home..
2. no other fast internet source... but can bring the download packages if i ask my uncle from his office...by giving him download address
3. i want to try various method.. so likely i am going to crash... so every time i donot want to download those packages again and again for fresh start...
4. This article or section is out of date. Reason: ftp.archlinux.org has been shut down. is said on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/of … f_packages... so what should i do next..
