Weird USB issues - syncing iPhone

Hello,

I'm having some problems syncing an iPhone with my computer. I hate using the damn thing, but my car doesn't have android support, so I'm stuck with it. Neither Banshee or Thunar detect the iPhone when it's plugged in, but I see it when I run lsusb. I can mount it using ifuse, but that doesn't particularly help because I can't sync to it. I tried using iTunes in VirtualBox but I couldn't add the phone to the USB devices because VirtualBox didn't recognize it either. So it seems that somewhere along the line, it isn't being fully recognized by my PC. When I do dmesg I get the following at the end:

[20859.124736] usb 2-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 9 using ehci-pci
[20859.439709] ipheth 2-1.2:4.2: Apple iPhone USB Ethernet device attached
[20859.472362] ipheth 2-1.2:4.2 enp0s29u1u2c4i2: renamed from eth0

Could it be that it's recognizing the iPhone as a network device and disallowing other access to it?

I'm also thinking that somehow my user doesn't fully have access to USB devices. My user is a member of the uucp group so I'm not sure how to fix that, and I can read and write to USB drives, so maybe that isn't it.
