Can't resize windows in GNOME 3.16

After today's update to GNOME 3.16 I can no longer re-size any windows in gnome-shell with the mouse, other than nautlius windows. All other apps (including other GNOME apps, e.g gnome-terminal) don't change the cursor shape to the butted-arrow as you near the border and nor can I actually grab and resize the border. I can resize them if I use ALT + middle mouse.

It's the same behaviour as a window that has been automatically snapped to the side. Those windows don't allow resize other than via ALT + middle mouse. However the windows are not snapped when this problem occurs.

Re: Can't resize windows in GNOME 3.16

Does this happen with default Adwaita gtk and shell theme?

There's some major changes in themeing (again!) especially for window decorations an it could be that some outdated themes didn't draw the "resize grab border area" for that reason.

EDIT. Actually I might be having the same issue. However I can resize the windows if I click and drag on the border area, but my arrow mouse cursor doesn't switch to the resize cursor until I click and drag to resize.

It also happens with any theme. Looks like only applications with "server-side-decorations" (that can't be technically right) are effected

Yes, I have always only used default Adwaita theme and that is where I am seeing the problem.

Note I have 2 other installs of Arch in Virtualbox (one on same host, one on a Mac OSX host) which I pretty much maintain and update in parallel with similar packages and environment etc. They allow re-sizing fine. This problem is happening only on my x64 intel box.

I also just found another app (apart from Nautilus) for which windows resize fine. That is gnome-tweak-tool. So it seems some gnome apps are ok, others are not.

PS: Your later edit above is right. I can (awkwardly) click and drag from the title.

In 3.16 its seems most app windows show the 'drag to resize' cursor when one hovers over a side edge, a bottom corner, or the bottom edge of the window, while other app windows (e.g., gnome-terminal) don't reveal the special cursor until one hovers and presses the left button.

Additionally, it seems to me that the hover has to be unusually precise, maybe simply because there's no automatic cursor change to indicate the edge/corner location.

[After further experiment, I found that if I do a 'left button down-up' inside the gnome-terminal window, then immediately mouse over an edge or corner the 'drag to resize' cursor appears and can be dragged.  Novel!]

Re: Can't resize windows in GNOME 3.16

I have the same behaviour after the update to 3.16. The one thing that I also noticed while trying to resize a gnome-terminal window is that the cursor changes only on the left sides(top, middle and bottom edges) of the window and the complete top edge. That leaves the top, bottom and the complete right sides, on which the cursor doesn't change.

Re: Can't resize windows in GNOME 3.16

Argh. Now I find that the resizing/cursors of the gnome-terminal window functioning entirely normally. So the issue may well be transitory or intermittent.

Re: Can't resize windows in GNOME 3.16

I'm experiencing the same issue and have filed an appropriate bug [1] in the GNOME bugzilla to make the developers aware of this. Hopefully it will get fixed with the next point release.

Re: Can't resize windows in GNOME 3.16

same issue here.

however the only place the curser does not change is the bottom right and this issue only appears with gnome-terminal.
Also I can still resize the window, the curser just does not indicate the possibility to do so.

Have you tried resizing the window without the curser indicating that you can do so (without the cursur changing)?

Re: Can't resize windows in GNOME 3.16

Having the same/similar issue.
Applications that are affected are gThumb and gnome-disks.
I use the LXDE theme, and until a recent update these two applications were fine. Now they cannot be resized to anything manually, only maximize and minimize.
Found one thread on another forum saying that "window resize" needs to be enabled through compiz manager, well I'd hate to have to install compiz just to
restore the window resize functionality. Seems this affects any GTK application.
