major updates for glibc and gcc?

Beside the changes that glibc 2.3.6 will bring are there any plans to move quickly to gcc4.1 and glibc 2.4? Both are released in stable verion but there're still not in testing.

Re: major updates for glibc and gcc?

We've had the big Xorg move, gcc 4.1 and glibc 2.4 will force us to recompile most of the distro, so it's better to ship Arch 0.7.2 with Xorg7, gcc 4.0.3 and glibc 2.3.6 first and then migrate to gcc 4.1/glibc 2.4.

Before we do this, we have a GNOME 2.14 migration to go first, so I guess it will take a while before we're on glibc 2.4/gcc 4.1.

kde 3.5.2 is also round the corner, this should be done with old gcc/glibc too.

Re: major updates for glibc and gcc?

when is 3.5.2 expected? Do they make it in time before I wreck up testing with a dbus upgrade, or do we have to rebuild 3.5.1 with that?

Re: major updates for glibc and gcc?

3.5.2 tagging is done on 17th, then one week testing then it can go to current, it depends on you how fast dbus can move into current, i have already packages that run with new dbus.

March 17th, 2006: Tagging KDE 3.5.2

But it looks like they're a bit late this time.

Re: major updates for glibc and gcc?

Since I don't have time to do much on gnome now, and since I guess arjan doesn't have all the time in the world either, I guess we'll wait with dbus until KDE 3.5.2. There's many other bugs to fix at this moment, so I'll do those first in the small amounts of spare time I have until the 17th.

None of this stuff goes on the ISO. Are you sure you've read the docs and about Arch's rolling release system? This will go into extra when its ready and you upgrade with pacman -Syu, that downloads it all. The iso is just a base install to get your system up and running.

From http://archlinux.org/~jason/newsletters … eb-05.html:

We plan on having maintenance releases every 3 months, their version numbers will be X.Y.Z (like 0.7.1). Major releases will happen when there are large changes to the installation environment (udev, initrd, installer). The next maintenance release will be in April.

Hi,

gcc 4.1 is better than 4.0.3, and applications linked with glibc 2.3 easily run also with glibc 2.4, so there is no need recompiling everything, IMHO.

Re: major updates for glibc and gcc?

gcc and glibc are very important packages, we can tell you how easy it is to upgrade such big things, that needs time and is not an easy task.
