Can't access trash files unless I run file managers with dbus-launch

What does dbus-launch do and why do I have to use it to be able to view certain things on my file managers. For example, recents, trash and network as well as removable media only work if I run:

 dbus-launch nemo

Otherwise, if I just open up nemo normally, I will get an error saying 'Sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": Operation not supported'.

What does 'dbus-launch' do? Can I get the same functionality without having to type that the same way every time? Can I set up a way for nemo to always start in this mode?

Thanks for any help.

Which DE/WM do you use?  How do you start your X server etc?

Is the dbus service running?

I'm running i3 without a desktop environment.

How do I check if dbus is running?
