Disabling HDMI audio with nvidia drivers

A bit of background first:

The Arch install in question is on a USB drive which I use on a fairly old (5 years) desktop PC. Installing Arch alongside Windows is not an option as it is not my PC. This particular machine has a strange problem with the graphics card; it's an nvidia GTS240 which produces a crackling sound on the HDMI audio output. It only does it sometimes, and I suspect it's linked to certain graphics-related operations, as it tends to happen mostly when I scroll. The monitor is connected with an HDMI cable but the card only outputs DVI, so I'm using an adapter there.

Regardless of what is causing the problem, I was able to fix it on Windows by disabling the HDMI audio output through the nvidia driver settings frontend. So my question is, is it possible to do the same on Arch?

Things I have tried that didn't work:
- muting all outputs with alsamixer
- removing snd_hda_intel and just about every other audio-related module
- changing drivers (I tried nouveau and nvidia340xx, even though it's not recommended for USB installs)
- googling, though no one seems to have run into a similar problem

Cheers
