Just don't bother to start FAM on boot, and gnome-vfs will use inotify.

Guess I'm confused a bit.  Every time I go to install KDE, I notice that FAM gets installed as part of "kdebase".  If it isn't needed with KDE, why is it a dependency?

It's needed if you want to monitor remote files. If you're not monitoring files on some other system, you don't need it.

We can't make it optional, since the libfam library gets linked in gnome-vfs and kdelibs. Both don't use it if they can use inotify.
