Just don't bother to start FAM on boot, and gnome-vfs will use inotify.

It should be optional dependancy, then.
Excessive showering, grooming, and toothbrushing is not only vain, it wastes valuable coding time.

Guess I'm confused a bit. Every time I go to install KDE, I notice that FAM gets installed as part of "kdebase". If it isn't needed with KDE, why is it a dependency?

It's needed if you want to monitor remote files. If you're not monitoring files on some other system, you don't need it.

Okay - thanks, Gullible. That makes sense. It was mentioned earlier in the thread but I somehow missed it.

We can't make it optional, since the libfam library gets linked in gnome-vfs and kdelibs. Both don't use it if they can use inotify.
