mini-display port to dual dvi - mirroring not independent in arander

hello,
at work i'm running arch on a 2013 mac air, and things work great.

i have a mini-display port to dvi adapter to use an external monitor. i configure it w/ arandr. works great.

i recently got a mini-dp to dual dvi adapter to try and use two external monitors. they both "work" (e.g. are detected and render correctly) but are just a mirror of each other. since they share the same mini-dp port arandr only sees them as a single monitor. is there a way i can fix this? i don't care if they are detected as independent screens or both of them extend to be a larger 2nd screen. i just want to use them both w/o mirroring.

update, it seems that after a while it even stop mirroring
