Odd boot issue

Earlier today, I ran the code

openbox --restart

and managed to freeze my PC; being the impatient person that I am, I held the power button down to shut the PC off. Upon reboot, the computer displayed a black screen with a little white horizontal line. The PC didn't respond to any of the keys that I press. After about half a minute, the PC loaded up normally and I was able to access grub, etc. A little research in my phone led to me find that this is an issue with the CPU locating a bootable device. Technically, I can live with the 30 seconds or so for the PC to start booting. However, I was wondering if there was a solution to this, or if this has ever happened to someone.

Re: Odd boot issue

Did it happen only once or happening regularly after that?

Try running fsck on all your disks and maybe re-install grub..

Re: Odd boot issue

And when exactly did it happen? After bootloader or before? Was it maybe just the fsck during boot? (If that is the case it should not happen again unless you force shutdown again)

I put at button on it. Yes. I wish to press it, but I'm not sure what will happen if I do.  (Gune | Titan A.E.)

Re: Odd boot issue

It happens regularly and it happens before the bootloader boots up. I've re-installed GRUB and yet the problem persists. I ran fsck on my boot partition and got the following output

fsck from util-linux 2.26.1
e2fsck 1.42.12 (29-Aug-2014)
/dev/sda1: clean, 335/102400 files, 56007/409600 blocks

I don't know if this helps but, my Display Manager is laggy now. It's unresponsive to my clicks for about 30 seconds as well. I'm not too knowledgable but maybe this is a hardware issue?

Re: Odd boot issue

Check if your drive reports any errors (SMART). If this is a conventional hdd(not ssd) the drive might be slow to start which could be a sign of beginning failure of the drive.

Re: Odd boot issue

Your hard drive is quite old but the attributes seem fine. Care to elaborate more about your hardware, mainly graphics and ram?

Re: Odd boot issue

Sorry for the late reply.

I bought this Dell Vostro 260 about two months on CL, so I don't know how old it is nor how much wear and tear it has gotten.

The processor is Intel Core i3-2120, 4gb of RAM. The graphics card is integrated to the CPU. I've heard many times that forcefully powering off your PC is bad, yet I've done for years. I guess that I now just finally managed to face repercussions for doing so. It seems to me as if I would just have to get a new hard drive.
