Hello,
I have installed Arch Linux and XFCE for two weeks now and I'm very excited with this flexible distro. The only issue that i have is the functionality of the xfce4-mixer. I click on the applications-multimedia-audio mixer and while the process be displayed on the task manager, the GUI window won't open. After a reboot the problem may be solved but after another reboot the problem returns.
When I run as a root the command: xfce4-mixer, the output which displayed is:
xfce4-mixer: Failed to initialize xfconf: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
I have nvidia sound card and (on board) hda intel but following the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce#Xfce4_mixer
I changed the default sound card from settings-editor --> xfce4-mixer replacing the value of sound-card to the PlaybackBuiltinAudioAnalogStereoPulseAudioMixer
to fucntion correctly with PulseAudio. I executed several reboots and the xfce4-mixer opened correclty. Unfortunately today, the problem returns again.
When I'm trying to kill the process of the xfce4-mixer, I can't.
I tried set the default sound card following the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … sound_card but nothing changed.
The sound and the alsamixer works fine.
How can I fix it ?
Thank you in advance !

Make sure that xfconfd is running.
As a note, xfce4-mixer is no longer being actively developed. From the release notes:
Due to gstreamer1.0 having dropped the mixer-interface entirely, and xfce4-mixer and xfce4-volumed relying on this interface with gstreamer0.10, our mixer application and volume daemon cannot be ported to 1.0 and are consequently not maintained anymore.
A new pulseaudio mixer plugin has been added to the Xfce git tree - you might want to give that a try. From the readme file:
Xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin is a panel plugin for controlling an audio
output volume of the PulseAudio mixer. The volume can be adjusted using
keyboard shortcuts, mouse wheel, a slider in a popup menu (todo), or via
a linked external audio mixer tool.
It works in a manner very similar to xfce4-mixer but more integrated with pulseaudio.

Thank you for your reply,
xfconfd is already running.
I installed pulseaudio mixer plugin and pavucontrol but it happens something odd. When I click on the PulseAudio volume control, it opens a window with the following message:Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait... And when I run pavucontrol as a root a window displays:
Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK
and on the terminal:
(pavucontrol:1509): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_main_quit: assertion 'main_loops != NULL' failed
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.
I'm very confused with this problem.

If you're running pavucontrol (or xfce4-mixer) as root, don't. Just run it normally in your user profile.

No, I run it in my user profile also, but the problem remains the same.

Is pulseaudio running? How is it started? How do you log into Xfce?
Did you walk through the Pulseaudio wiki entry?

Problem solved ! I run these commands:
rm -rf /tmp/pulse* ~/.pulse* ~/.config/pulse
pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio --start
And after a reboot pavucontrol works fine !
Thank you very much for your help !
