Radeon Shared GPU Memory Issue

Hi everyone!

I am using a small netbook (ASUS R103b) with 2gb of ram, of which 1.5gb are available due to gpu shared mem. It's a amd a1200 apu and uses the radeon module, I am desperately trying to reduce the shared gpu mem for more application mem, but without success so far.

Reducing radeon.gartsize didn't have an effect, neither did radeon.vramlimit (I checked, they were set correctly - but neither setting with kernel command line nor /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf  in mkinitcpio.conf FILES did have an effect). It is a uefi system, but in the uefi menu, there is no option for shared mem amount (there are nearly no options at all, maybe there is some way to enable some kind of advanced settings?). The command efivar -l also doesn't give me a hint. Any help would be appreciated :) Ideas?

Before I forget, here my system information:

efivar -l

Re: Radeon Shared GPU Memory Issue

I may be wrong but the memory split is usually set on the bios/firmware. Since you are using a netbook and netbooks/laptops are known for having bios/firmware with a very limited amount of options, I'd say you may be out of luck.

On the other hand 2GB is not a lot of memory to start with, so even if you can reclaim some of the memory allocated for the video card I'd say you won't gain much. You should also be aware that reducing the dedicated memory too much may cause you other problems that might not be apparent at first.

Re: Radeon Shared GPU Memory Issue

I just realized that I forgot to say thanks - so thanks! I have given up on this, you're probably right. Instead, it made a lot more sense to optimize my memory usage by using lightweigt software, now I'm good with 1.5G most of the time.
