Arch installer hangs on boot

I am trying to install arch on an old, 32 bit laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-FJ78GP). Since the BIOS on the device does not support USB booting, I have burnt the latest (5/2015) arch iso to a DVD using my Mac. After I select "Boot Arch Linux (i686)" from the initial menu, the initial startup hangs at "Welcome to Arch Linux" or "[ OK ] Started dev Kernel Device Manager" or "[ OK ] Started Update UTMP about System Boot/Shutdown." I also get the "Disabling irq #9. Try booting with irqpoll option" message. The device has a 2 GHz Intel Pentium M processor with 512 MB of RAM. Thanks in advance

Why don't you try that then?

Hint: press "e" in the gummiboot menu (with the Arch entry highlighted) and add "irqpoll" (without the quotation marks) to the end of the line that starts with "linux" then boot the modified entry.

You will have to configure your boot loader/manager to add this kernel parameter to the kernel command line in the installed system -- I will leave that to you...

Re: Arch installer hangs on boot

Did you tried a live CD/ISO like ArchBoot or similar ?
If it starts up with them flawlessly, then you can go for the Arch.

do it good first, it will be faster than do it twice the saint wink
