Nvidia discrete graphics without bumblebee on secondary X

Hi everyone,
im stuck on a problem with setting up secondary X server with nvidia discrete graphics. I followed the guide here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus - for Using nvidia proprietary driver.
I have mesa-libgl and lib32-mesa-libgl instead of nvidia ones(to run primary X with intel)
I have nvidia drivers installed.
Everything is up to date.

I execute this to run X:

sudo DISPLAY=:8 xinit /home/witko/.xinitrc.nvidia -- :8 -xf86config xorg.nvidia.conf vt2

I have to run it as root cos otherwise the ModulePath settings are ignored - i would like to fix this too.

My xorg.nvidia.conf:

Section "Files"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib32/nvidia/xorg/modules"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib32/xorg/modules"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib64/nvidia/xorg/modules"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
  Identifier "layout"
  Screen 0 "nvidia"
  Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
  Identifier "nvidia"
  Driver "nvidia"
  BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  Identifier "nvidia"
  Device "nvidia"
  Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration" "Yes"
  Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none"
EndSection

Section "Device"
  Identifier "intel"
  Driver "modesetting"
  Option "AccelMethod" "none"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  Identifier "intel"
  Device "intel"
EndSection

My .xinitrc.nvidia:

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto
openbox

The X starts but runs on software rendering - complains about module swrast when running glxgears.
I managed to run this with the nvidia libgl but then default X fails on intel.
I believe the xorg log is quite clean:

Thanks!

Re: Nvidia discrete graphics without bumblebee on secondary X

It might be related to nvidia xorg settings - output of xrandr --listproviders

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x1fb cap: 0x1, Source Output crtcs: 0 outputs: 0 associated providers: 1 name:NVIDIA-0
Provider 1: id: 0x47 cap: 0x2, Sink Output crtcs: 3 outputs: 5 associated providers: 1 name:modesetting

I believe the Source output crts: 0 might be a clue. Otherwise it looks ok.

Re: Nvidia discrete graphics without bumblebee on secondary X

Ok so that was not the problem. I installed nvidia-libgl and run the X with same command. The X starts fine and Nvidia is in play. Ouptut from xrandr --list providers is exactly the same.
I tried to compate Xorg.log with nvidia-libgl vs mesa-libgl and it is exactly the same except these extra few lines with mesa:

[ 820.612] (II) modeset(G0): Modeline "3840x2160"x0.0 533.25 3840 3888 3920 4000 2160 2163 2168 2776 -hsync -vsync (133.3 kHz e)
[ 820.623] reporting 3 5 26 203
[ 820.649] (II) modeset(G0): EDID vendor "SHP", prod id 5168
[ 820.649] (II) modeset(G0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: 3840x2160 Warning: We only handle separate sync.
[ 820.649] (II) modeset(G0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:
[ 820.649] (II) modeset(G0): Modeline "3840x2160"x0.0 533.25 3840 3888 3920 4000 2160 2163 2168 2222 -hsync -vsync (133.3 kHz eP)

But these occurr quite often in the log so im my eyes it says nothing.

I checked content of the nvidia-libgl package and compared it to mesa-libgl. Obviously there are more libs to consider not just /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.
But its weird 'cos the logs could at least point to something.
I believe that without mesa-libgl i cannot run X on intel. But if bumblebee can do it with it then it sould be possible manually too.

Re: Nvidia discrete graphics without bumblebee on secondary X

I tried to take care of the libraries path by setting:

Section "Files"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib32/nvidia"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib32/nvidia/xorg/modules"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib32/xorg/modules"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib64/nvidia/xorg/modules"
  ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
EndSection

But this does not work. Same old story. Nothing in log, software rendering. Im runnig out of ideas:/

Re: Nvidia discrete graphics without bumblebee on secondary X

Finally i found a solution. I was right about the libraries, but module path is something different. The magical variable is:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/nvidia,/usr/lib32/nvidia

So it seems its perfectly possible to run separate X on nvidia to play games with good performance. If i have some spare time and find out how i will make a small package providing some simple executable to run app in separate full GPU power X.

Note that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not complete and should be used for debugging. Other solution would be dynamic symlinking of nvidia and mesa libgl - see here. I personally like the variable approach better.

Re: Nvidia discrete graphics without bumblebee on secondary X

I've created a github repository for this. Locally i have the package built, its not of superior quality but definetely works for me. I will try to wrap it all into an AUR package to share. You can find the repo here
