[SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

The setup:

We have been using a computer (running Arch) hooked up to our tv for about a year now. Generally its tasks are, plex, some mild internetting, etc. Mostly Plex and some tinkering with steam big picture though.

The problem:

Over the last few days the BF has started redoing some of the themes in fluxbox on his own user, which had been going just fine. Last night he was swapping out cursors (both system wide and for his user). He then decided to reboot for whatever reason (who knows, i was asleep tongue) and now X wont start. Of course we had lightDM running so this just caused an endless loop of trying and failing to start an X session for infinity smile

This morning I disabled lightDM so we could log into the usual console business to try and figure out what went wrong.

First I just tried to startx in my user (which has gone untouched for like 6 months). Since I had no .xinitrc file I figured whatever the system one that comes default would just do whatever it does (twm usually in my experience). I was instead greeted with what looked like X running to completion with no errors.

Here's the Xorg log:

Since I had no .xinitrc file, I thought "hey this is strange." So I created one:

#!/bin/sh

exec startfluxbox

Which resulted in the exact same behavior. X starts, thinks things are done, X finishes. No GUI

For reference this is /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file:

#!/bin/sh

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
    xrdb -merge $sysresources

fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then
    xrdb -merge "$userresources"
fi

if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
    xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi

# start some nice programs

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
 for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
 done
 unset f
fi

twm &
xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 &
xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 &
xterm -geometry 80x20+494-0 &
exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login

Seems pretty legit to me. So then I started hunting around on forum post after forum post. Most of which resulted in the solution being some malformed .xinitrc file.

Based on those posts I can cover some info though:

my home directory is owned entirely by my user.
.xinitrc when I had it was owned by my user.
I created a new test user:

sudo useradd -m test
sudo su test
startx

Which resulted in the same problem (all that user has in there is some bash configs and no .xinitrc and thats all).

If I startx as root/sudo then everything is fine (twm comes up as expected with a bunch of xterms). Which makes me think there's some strange permission that got applied that makes the  any WM or DE give up on life and end causing X to think "OH MAN WE ARE DONE"

I have no idea where to go from here. I've searched the Xorg, Xinit, Fluxbox, Cursor changing wikis on arch and nothing hmm I've made sure the system is updated pacman -Syu (and rebooted to make sure things settle in). I reinstalled Xorg based on the packages mentioned on the xorg arch wiki just in case they would set whatever broken permission is broken back to correct.

I usually just reference the forums and that helps me like 100% of the time. I actually had to create an account since I cant seem to figure this one out. heheh smile

So any ideas or help would be much appreciated!! smile

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

Welcome to the Arch Linux. forums. It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on this.  I agree that the window manager is exiting for some reason and then the X session exits normally.
What if you create a new user and try as that new user?
Of what groups is your user a member? (look at the output of groups )

wheel games video audio input users <user>

Also I did create a new user (test in the post above) However I did not set up any groups on it. This user also has no .xinitrc file (wasn't created when user was made or when startx was initiated). That user cannot startx either.

Giving test the users, video, audio, input groups still results in no WM/DE

he was swapping out cursors (both system wide and for his user). He then decided to reboot for whatever reason (who knows, i was asleep tongue) and now X wont start.

I think we need to know some more detail about this.

What exactly was he doing with the cursors?

Were there any packages upgraded before the reboot?

Please also post the output of:

ls -l /home

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

The xinitrc file should be copied to "~/.xinitrc".

Your xinitrc file is missing "exec startfluxbox" at the end.

Then try "startx".

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

As far as the cursors were concerned, he modified the entries in /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme to read

[Icon Theme]
Inherits=Ubuntu

Where Ubuntu is an icon theme in /usr/share/icons/Ubuntu.

I think the default is Adwaita. Even so, if the fonts were bad, I'd get some error. But I dont. Additionally I replicated his changes on my laptop with no problems.

Plus briefly during the lightDM forever loop of doom, you do get a mouse you can move for a moment with the Ubuntu cursor before the xsession ends and lightDM tries to start it up again. StartX does _NOT_ have this behavior. It just goes to a blank screen for a moment and successfully exits.

Like I said in the original post. All the files in the home directories are owned by their respective users. But here they are again anyway.

keep in mind that I did add an .xinitrc to my user. Again this is posted in the first post. Also the .xinitrc.old you see is a copy of the one found in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

krono-matrixer: That is exactly what is posted in my first post.

no .xinitrc should load the system default one in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc which by default tries to run twm and some xterms and xclock.
the .xinitrc I added has exec startfluxbux, which doesn't work.
I also copied the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file to my user as .xinitrc and edited it to have exec startfluxbox.

None of these work.

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

Oh sorry I skipped that. Yes. (but these problems appeared before I did the update. I did the update and rebooted to make sure that it wasnt some old package conflicting or something) Most of it was QT5 stuff. There was a kernel update as well. Is there a way to get an exact histroy of what is installed?

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

That looks to be from this morning. I was thinking of last night -- ie, *before* the problem appeared. You mentioned that you were asleep; does the log show that your BF updated the system then?

There's not much before this for a good long while. And this appears to be when he started messing around with cursors

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

This might not be fruitful because you said it works for root, but how about checking to see if there were any partial upgrades done.

Try a pacman -Syu

Edit:  Looking at your logs, it appears that may have happened.

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

I gave it a shot. Looks like the remaining stuff is:

coreutils
exo
feh
lib32-mesa (steam is 32bit)

Anyway after finishing out the update and rebooting.. everything is still the same. startx just goes right back to the console and no xinit stuff seems to happen. sudo startx works fine and brings up the expected twm.

hmm

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to run any xinit scripts

So after taking a break and coming back to this I managed to solve it (always helps to walk away from the problem haha)

I poked around for a bit and decided to start trying different cursor themes to see what was up. After I changed it away from the Ubuntu cursor BF picked up to one of the cursors that comes with the default system (Adwaita for example), everything worked.

What is upsetting is that there were no errors to suggest this. Just random stabs in the dark and guessing. I suppose this means that the Ubuntu cursor pack he found must have been bad. Thanks Head_on_a_Stick for the cursor suggestions. I mean its pretty obvious it was something to do with the recent changes but the lack of errors made me think it was other problems.

Anyway thanks for all the help! smile
