systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

Hi,

I am running Arch with Cinnamon started by mdm-display-manager. I had this running for quite some time without an issue.
Recently an issue popped out - OCCASIONALLY systemd-logind fails to start and I get stuck on boot screen. This happens maybe once in 5-10 boots. I have to do hard reset afterwards. CTL+ALT+DEL won't work, I can not switch to other console and I have no network to SSH to that machine.

Other than that, system starts just fine.
I am not sure, how to debug this further and would appreciate advice.

Re: systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. systemd-logind sporadically fails to start, therefore preventing the login prompt to appear. Resetting the machine is the only solution in that case. Most of the time, the system start works without problems though. Here are a few relevant lines from my logs:

# journalctl --unit=systemd-logind | grep -C50 'Connection timed out'

-- Reboot --

Apr 22 10:17:01 deltaflyer systemd[1]: systemd-logind.service has no holdoff time, scheduling restart.
-- Reboot --

Here is relevant output from the complete log (not only systemd-logind):

It almost seems to be a problem with a dbus and/or NetworkManager race condition.

Re: systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

Oh, I forgot to mention: I don't start a graphical login manager, I boot to the console and start xfce from there after login (for rootless X to work).

Re: systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

Hi, I have exactly the same issue. Puzzling thing is, I cannot change console either and only a hard reset is required. Looks like a race condition as this is difficult to reproduce. I use KDE5/Plasma 5.

Re: systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

Same issue here, same symptoms with the same kind of log.

There's a 30s timeout before dbus kicks in, but unfortunately it's too late for systemd-logind, which gives up.
It looks like DBus is started a little bit sooner when the boot succeeds, but it might just be a wrong guess.

I have 2 or 3 logs of both successful and failed startups, you think it might help.

Re: systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

Came here to say I have the same issue.
I found this thread from the archlinux mailing list and it looks to be relevant. https://www.mail-archive.com/arch-gener … 38901.html

In particular is this post and the next couple of posts after it: https://www.mail-archive.com/arch-gener … 38978.html

Same here. This patch will not be included in a future update ?

Re: systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

I changed /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service - modified the line

After=systemd-user-sessions.service getty@tty1.service
to
After=systemd-user-sessions.service getty@tty1.service dbus.service

Haven't had an issue since. There was systemd update after that, do you guys still have the issue or can I just revert this workaround?
