blank screen on boot after upgrade

i'm having the same problem as https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=193505 , i have a radeon hd 6250 card, neither catalyst or the open source drivers installed and i'm booting straight to tty. i can get into a terminal if i disable kernel mode setting, though. i have x installed but not configured and it was updated today. ideally i'd like to be able to enable kms so i can use the open-source driver.. thanks.
