I haven't ever needed to use the microphone on my laptop, but recently I have been needing it. I can't seem to get it working though. Laptop is a Lenovo E545. It's worth mentioning that when I got this computer a year ago, the mic would work during an occasional skype call.
I followed this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … microphone
Which led me here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … Microphone
Even looked at the external links in this section
and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … ot_working
Basically I went into alsamixer and enabled the capture channels, that didn't seem to have any effect. Then tried passing msi_enable=1 to the snd-hda-intel module, but that didn't do anything either. It looks like I'm missing 'Mic' in alsamixer, and amixer outputs only 'Master' and 'Capture'.
In pauvcontrol there are no Input devices either.
Tested to see if the mic is working by
arecord -d 5 foo.wav
aplay foo.wav
Not sure what I should try next.

Do you have pulseaudio-alsa installed?
Check out this link from the wiki.

Also, can you paste the output of
arecord -l
